MSN really irks me sometimes. They tend to publish news stories that they think are interesting, but in reality have no relevance to anything going on in the world today. This article is an example of just that. It tells, very briefly I might add, about a woman who got into an argument with a man in a church parking lot and was then shot and killed. My question is, what's the big deal, really?
Let's face it, people are killed every day. And, not to be stereotypical or anything, but the shooting occured in Oakland, of all places. Maybe if it occured in my hometown of Derby, Kansas, I might be a little more shocked, because people don't get shot there very often, if at all.
But the part about this article that really pushes my buttons is the fact that they emphasize the idea that it was not only in the church parking lot, but in front of the congregation. Once again, where is the point here? They were witnesses to a crime, but what does the fact that they were in church say? Does it simply refresh the idea that these were good, innocent people? Good, innocent people witness crimes all the time, and once again, this happened in Oakland, so it probably wasn't much of a surprise to them. Plus, we cannot safely assume that just because someone attends church that they are at all a good person. My state's own famous killer, BTK, attended church and seemed like a "normal, everyday guy" to all of his friends and neighbors. But, we all know that story, don't we?
The article ends with this quote from the Bishop of the church:
"The church is supposed to be a safe haven for people to come to and now, as you can see, there are no safe havens."
Once again, emphasis on church. If this crime had occured in, say, a gas station parking lot, would it have even made the news?
I understand the idea of spin in journalism, but this is just ridiculous.

I see the point you're making. It is very similar to the stories of teens/children/adults kidnapped, some don't make the news, and some do. It all depends on money, and location.

I believe that some people have become accustomed to hearing these kinds of stories. I don't think it should be like that because that's someone's loved one that died.
I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. ~Booker T. Washington
that's true that it's someone's loved one, but it's basically ingrained in our nature not to care. it's kindof the "sucks to be you" mentality that alot of us have. its a very cynical way to look at things, sure, but that's how it is sometimes. now, I'm not necessarily trying to take the cynical approach, but I'm just wondering why certain stories make the news even though they're irrelevant to anything important going on in the world. Like the comment before you said, it's someone's decision which stories get printed and which ones don't, and not every murder makes the news.
The big deal is she was a relative (Cousin) of someone I know. She was a person not an it. Yes people die everyday by the hands of people like you who don't care about life, but the news picks what they want to go with. Doesn't mean she is any more or less important then they.
The big deal is as the Minister said that there are places most people deem sacred, but people like you don't and feel you can do whatever you want. I never think innocent people who die at the hands of people like you is an "Oh well, so what kind of coffee do you serve." It grieves me. If they were doing something that they weren't supposed to then, Drug dealing or whatever then it comes with the territory, even though it is still sad, but going to church and over an argument? He is a punk and so are you. I wish I could slap the crap out of you.
You said you'd be shocked if it happened in your town but don't care because it's oakland. Why is that is it because that's where all the n*ggers live? Huh!? Speak up! Well I happen to be black and resent your attitude. Where is your Jon Benet 'and the big deal is?'.
You try to come off like some humanitarian but you're a phony. If you really cared about what was going on in the world you would realize she was part of the world and that even the dumbest of creatures can see what the relevance to the world's condition.
Oh yeah you made the comment that the article emphasizes that because they are christians and go to church makes them good people. No where did it say that, which since you like to pretend to look beyond the veil, I will really look beyond yours. You hate christians and anything to do with them. You have an Anti-christ spirit. Which is funny because when you get into trouble or someone you know. You'll call out to God but he will not hear you. The bible says "I will bless them who bless you, and curse them who curse you"
The thing is you like a fool have opened a door for it to happen to you or a family member and when it does everybody else is gonna be like "and the big deal is?"
The bible calls it planting seeds or for secular people it's called Karma.
There will come a time we christians will say no more and fight back and tear through our enemies like a whirlwind.
*There will come a time we christians will say no more and fight and tear through our enemies like a whirlwind*
*He is a punk and so are you. I wish I could slap the crap out of you.*
Im sure Jesus will give you a big high-five for it, too. Because you know, he enjoys going around calling people punks and slapping them.
...Hypocrite.
As you said: *The bible says "I will bless them who bless you, and curse them who curse you"*
do not think the person you are cursing is exempt from this rule just because they may not be a Christian in your eyes. Do not think you are exempt from the consequences of treating others as you are simply because you are "Christian".
She wasn;t being racist...just before she made the comment that set you off she also said: "not to be stereotypical" meaning no she is NOT trying to be racist. She was simply making the comment in regards to Oakland, (where it happened) and the fact yes FACT that Oakland has a higher crime rate than others. This is fact found off of statistics not jjust mere opinion so don't judge her for that. Stop jumping to conclusions simply because of the color of your skin or someone elses. Isn't that what white people used to be accused of? Isn't that what Martin Luther King fought against? just curious.
Her whole point about the article was that she felt they were trying to get more attention by saying it was in a church parking lot....she wants people to realize that this could simply be a way to get uneccesary attention to the situation. it happened in the PARKING LOT not IN the CHURCH. the fact that it just so happened to be in the parking lot of a church and so got more media attention than a murder that happens in the parking lot of a gas station is where the bias is that she's commenting about. What is it that makes the person who got murdered in the parking lot of the church so much more special than someone who got murdered in the parking lot of a gas station? BOTH parties should be getting as much media attention, but they don't. You made the point yourself that the woman who got murdered was a person not an "it" and all jessorzluvsu was doing was making that same point. just from the opposite end of the spectrum. because people often DONT care about the person getting shot at the gas station but get all up in arms when its at a church. and THATS where the error is. maybe you should actually try LISTENING to what someone means instead taking what they have to say so widely out of context next time.
exactly. thanks alot for understanding my point and making it clear to someone who obviously didnt understand what I meant.
I dont think my post comes off as me being insensitive to someone being murdered. I understand that she was a person, and I always feel what most people feel when they hear about the death of another human being. Your heart goes out to them, it really does, but what more can you do if you dont even know the person or live near them or anything? it's hard to have strong emotions about something that's not close to your own little bubble.
And I dont quite understand the comparison that was made between me and the murderer, because I'm pretty sure no one on this site knows any more about me than what I've decided to post either in comments, blogs, or on my profile. And no where have I ever said anything that could be construed as me being capable of murder. I actually abhor violence, if you care to know. And no, I'm not a Christian, and I have my own personal reasons for that choice that I do not care to explain to you.
But the fact that I'm not a Christian has nothing to do with why I posted this blog in the first place. The Blog is about Media Bias and nothing else, not racism, not religious beliefs, NOTHING ELSE. Thank you.
It's funny how you can perfectly read and understand what she has written, yet you can't understand the meaning of the word "Wish".
'As you said: *The bible says "I will bless them who bless you, and curse them who curse you"*
'do not think the person you are cursing is exempt from this rule just because they may not be a Christian in your eyes. Do not think you are exempt from the consequences of treating others as you are simply because you are "Christian".'
Again you are soo good at reading, you're bad. The scripture that you are referring to is a biblical law in respose to her actions that she has set in motion not a curse from me. If you knew what you were talking about I might take you seriously. If she is a christian how can she belittle a woman's life? Why isn't she complaining about the other newscast we see on a daily? You can question what that I am a Christian but God has no doubt that I am and neither do I soo... It is really ingnorant for you to judge me and in the same breath say don't judge. I may be christian but does that stop me from being human? Am I now a robot? Who are you to tell me how I should react to someone who says that her death isn't all the news is making it to be.
"She wasn;t being racist...just before she made the comment that set you off she also said: "not to be stereotypical" meaning no she is NOT trying to be racist. The FACT that she wasn't trying makes it all the more outrageous.
The FACT you can't see it is Funny, you must be in the same boat
The FACT in her try not to be stereotypical she is being stereotypical.
The FACT is Oakland is mostly African-American, Ethnic, Hip Hop nation so to say "it is Oakland" is talking about the people. If is wasn't about the people then why say it at all? Acting like Oakland is just the worst place one could go in the USA! If you're not talking about the people then why not just say it happened.
There you sit and talk about ME jumping to conclusions, yet you and she are doing the same thing. If you are not white, you are white in your thinking. That is to say if people call you on your crap, WE are the ones jumping to conclusions because that is not what you said VERBALLY. Although you did say it in an underlying fashion. And honey regardless of MY ethnicity I would have still found her speach repulsive. The fact you don't says something about you.
For your information we have heard hundreds of times before about the gas station killings or the little white child being kidnapped or what not. I don't know what news you look at, but NORMAL news is always filled with that stuff. Why they are still talking about Anna Nicole Smith and Jon Benet Ramsey and the many more white people who have died years ago not that they are meaningless. They have and will have more than their share of media attention since it is their lives goal to be seen. So why is that when a black woman dies in a church parking lot its a publicity stunt? I'm not racist, I'm part caucasian my self but I state things how they REALLY are.
The whole point is that it happened at a Sacred place, where violence and hate in not supposed to enter in. But U Don't C That!
So the Bible allows you to "wish" harm upon someone as long as you don't actually carry it out? That makes no sense.
But religion aside, I had no idea from reading that article that the woman was African-American or even if her killer was African-American. Besides, you wouldnt even know that I'm white if I hadn't posted a picture on this thing anyways. What if I was African-American? Would that change your view of my words?
"The FACT that she wasn't trying makes it all the more outrageous.

How does it make my words more "outrageous" if I inadvertently "offended" you without meaning to? I dont think that makes it outrageous, at most it makes it a mistake. Maybe I should have worded it differently, but isn't that what this site is all about? Hearing other people's opinions about our writing and changing it or changing our attitudes accordingly?
And the fact that I mentioned that the murder took place in Oakland IS based on fact. Do a search on American cities with the highest crime rates. Compare Oakland, CA to Wichita, KS (where I'm from) and see my point. It doesnt matter whether the crimes are committed by white people or Black people. It's completely irrelevant. Crime is crime, no matter the race, religion, age, sex, nationality of the victim.

I'll repeat what I said above, I had NO IDEA that the woman was Black. This article has nothing to do with race, I was merely pointing out that the media picks and chooses which stories to report.
*Again you are soo good at reading, you're bad. The scripture that you are referring to is a biblical law in respose to her actions that she has set in motion not a curse from me.*
Again, you are soo good at reading, you're bad. I fully understood this was a biblical law thanks! I was stating it to make sure you understood that YOU CURSING HER (which dont think you were doing any less in God's eyes) is also part of this biblical law as well as part of its consequences.
*If she is a christian how can she belittle a woman's life?*
If you are a Christian how can you belittle someone's opinion? And secondly, as we've said many times before.....she wasn't belittling anyone.
*Why isn't she complaining about the other newscast we see on a daily?*
because that wasn't the point of her article. her point was that media was being bias to try and get more attention.
*You can question what that I am a Christian but God has no doubt that I am and neither do I soo*
well I thought Christians were supposed to be modeling their lives after Christ. But I guess since (as I said before) insulting people and threatening them with vengence is obviously in your opinion what Christ would have done......then I guess yeah, in your opinion, God WOULDN'T question your Chistianity
*It is really ingnorant for you to judge me and in the same breath say don't judge*
I'm not judging you, but God is
*If you are not white, you are white in your thinking. That is to say if people call you on your crap, WE are the ones jumping to conclusions because that is not what you said VERBALLY. Although you did say it in an underlying fashion.*
It's not a WHITE way of thinking....its a human thing. STOP bringing up the color of my skin. you know, this wasn't about racisim until YOU brought it up. And frankly it's irrelevant! and WHY is it irrelevant BECAUSE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HER POINT. You would know that if you would just LISTEN...er READ in this case...you cant really listen to a blog. And how do YOU know what she meant in an underlying fashion? I wasn't aware that people (in an underlying fashion) mean the exact opposite of what they say all the time. Does this mean that in an underlying way of saying you are Christian it means you're NOT Christian? hmmmm....
*And honey regardless of MY ethnicity I would have still found her speach repulsive. The fact you don't says something about you.*
And regardeless of MY ethnicity I still would have found what YOU had to say repulsive. The fact that you didn't says something about YOU and your Chistianity
*Why they are still talking about Anna Nicole Smith and Jon Benet Ramsey and the many more white people who have died years ago not that they are meaningless*
For the same reason that people still talk about Tupac and OJ Simpson (not that they are meaningless) and many more BLACK people in the media. They got too much (as well as the wrong type of) media attention.
*The whole point is that it happened at a Sacred place*
I didn't realize the PARKING LOT was sacred. Lemme ask, if the church parking lot is sacred do you still allow oil and antifreeze to be dripped on it or do you clean it up? Do you pick up every piece of gum a trash littered on it? Didn't think so
*The FACT that she wasn't trying makes it all the more outrageous.

okay, you really need to sort out the differences between FACTS and OPINIONS. I bolded "facts" to make you see that is WAS a FACT. its NOT an opinion (as your first 3 bolded "facts" are). Any survey or statistic will show you that Oakland has a higher crime rate than other cities in comparison. No one said anything aboutit being the worst place to live besides you when you made a reference to it....thats what I mean when I say jumping to conclusions. The fact of the majority of the residents there being black/ethnic doesn't really have anything to do with that fact that the crime rate there is higher. At least not in my opinion. And if in YOUR opinion it does...then I think YOU'RE being a little stereotypical.
Bottom line: this wasn't about racism until YOU brought it up. This wasn't about liking or disliking Christians until YOU brought it up. Hell, this wasn't even about the woman's life until YOU brought it up.
it was about MEDIA BIAS plain and simple. The media puts up what they think is going to get the most attention. Do you think the media put up the story because they cared about the woman? Because they CARE that it happened near a church? NO. But they knew it would get attention. They knew it would get higher ratings. And how do they know this? It's funny that the people I read it to (White, asian, black. Christian and non) Think the same thing as I said. People can justify their thoughts, a lier can justify every lie but a few and chosen can see what it is for what it is. Someone who is racist it not going to see that they are racist because it is the norm for them. Just really evaluate what you said.
the only thing I'm going to say in response to that is what i've been saying. I didnt mean to imply anything in my post regarding race. Once again, you don't know me and I dont think that you have the right to call me racist based on something you read on the internet and the fact that I'm a white girl from the Midwest.
because no one said ANYTHING about biasness based off of race EXCEPT FOR YOU!
So all you're really doing is making an argument against yourself.
And you're right a few chosen CAN see what it is for what it is. And what it is is MEDIA BIAS!
and YOU need to evaluate what you say as well.
