Cheating in College

Last week, in my history class, we had our first exam. That is the only class I have that day, so I spent the entire day studying to ensure that I knew the matierial. In addition to this, I had been studying for the past week for shorter periods of time. Upon receiving the test, I was pleased to discover that I knew the answer to almost every question. The girl next to me, however did not. Now, this class is one of those is an auditorium like setting, and we were at the very back, and as the test went in, I realized she was looking at my paper. I tried my hardest to cover it, but we were sitting in extremely close proximity to one another and this was not entirely possible. This wasn't the worst part though, I've experienced this is high school, people naturally look at other people's papers it seems.

This girl had one of those fancy phones that has internet connection on it, and she sat there, throughout the entire test looking up the answers to the test and whispering to her neighbor that she had found the answer. I finished before her, so when I came back to my seat, I began watching her. She basically retyped the question into a search engine and found the answer, and unfortunately google was good to her, because she got every question right. Except one, which she complained about excessivley because she could not find the answer online.

I just find this so unfair and irritating because I studied very hard, and here she didn't learn a thing, and we got the same grade on our tests. I feel like I should have told the professor, but at the same time, this is college, maybe it's time for me to grow up and not worry about other people. I just feel like in classrooms of this size, there should be more people around to make sure this doesn't happen. I also think the professor should not have had her back to the class working on her laptop, or whatever she was doing, because she completely missed this occurance.

Once lecture began, this girl pulled her laptop out and spent the entire time on facebook and myspace whispering loudly to her neighbor about every page she was looking at. No wonder she didnt know the matierial for the exam...

Thing of the past. At least you did what was right...Sorry others make your effort seem like a waste. Karma's a bitch though, believe she will get hers.

Man, that does suck. I had a class like that, but we had lots of GTAs walking around. See, this girl may have got away with it now. But once she gets caught, she might be sent to the judical affairs and get introuble for it. She will get caught one time. That is why i left my cheating ways back in highschool. Cause when you caught doing it now, the punishment is really hard.

I think they can actually kick you out of the school if you are caught cheating, but that might only be for certain circumstances. It's just appalling that someone wouldn't consider that huge consequence for one little exam...

If they treat cheating on a test like they do plagiarism, then yes, you can get kicked out of school.

responsibility to notify the teacher of cheats. I would discreetly ask the teacher to send a non-threatening TA to wander over to your section of the class and catch the cheat.

Do you think it is too late now to say something though? This was two weeks ago now.

Right now, it is just your word against the other student's. Usually, someone actually has to be caught in the act for the administration to do anything.

Yea, that makes sense. it's not like she would just admit to cheating. All I know is that I am not sitting down next to her the next time I go to that class.

Personally, I would have told the teacher, because your right, its not fair. And if your not into ratting one person out, I'd give the professor a heads up to keep a look out for cheaters, because you saw a few, or something along those lines. Also, on another note, someday this person may need to know the information, but not be able to recall it, and it will come back down on them.

i know that i cant stand when people cheat. i dont see the purpose of it. i feel like everyone should learn to do their own work. if you cheat i think that you might get no where in life. learning is a good way to proceed to other things. if cheating, you are going no farther than where you started.

I am a senior in high school taking college-level courses and I know how hard they can be, but you should have told that girl to study instead of looking at MySpace and Faceook so that she won't leech off her classmates' work. I know the feeling of having others earn the same grade as me for doing no work. I advise you that the next time someone tries to cheat, you put the right work with some wrong answers and change your answers to the correct answers at the last minute. Only change enough answers where the other prson fails and you have enough time to change your anwers to the correct answers at the end. It works every time.Just make sure the other person turns in their test first.

I thought about doing that, but it seemed like so much work, and I was afraid she might notice me erasing a lot.

It does seem like a lot of work, but the other girl would be less likely to cheat off of your paper if you show her that you are willing to sabotage yourself instead of giving her a free grade.

Another thing you could do is use a cover sheet. That way no one will be able to see your awnsers anyways.
