Yet another day of drama ensues. Britney’s sister is engaged and planning her pregnancy, Heidi released another single that seems to attack her man, and Obama has been rumored to be related to Brad Pitt.
Please.
What sort of society are we living in? Why do we place these individuals on pedestals and stalk their every move through tabloids, entertainment news, and gossip websites? Most of the individuals in the entertainment industry are very normal. There is typically nothing stellar about their appearance or their talent. So why is it that so many find it necessary to idolize these individuals? I find it sickening that people freak out when they have a celebrity sighting—“LOOK! It’s that Hills star!! She’s….OH MY GOSH….she’s EATING!” Clearly because celebrities are icons this must mean that they neither eat nor have bowel movements. I mean, really.
Imagine Paris Hilton straining at the stool. It puts things in perspective.
These people are just that—people. Human-beings. Children who went through adolescence and became adults. It's not our business if Britney Spears is having a rough patch. How has it suddenly become a national concern whether or not Angelina had a bad hair day?
In idolizing these people we give them power. Lindsey Lohan is famous—so she doesn’t have to stick around in jail like any other citizen would. How is this JUST? We are supposed to be equal in this country, not feeding off of the decisions of an elite few.
It is necessary to recognize (especially for the sake of the youth who are bombarded with celebrity gossip) that these are just people. There is no need to imitate them or to idolize them. In most cases their contribution to the world has been meager at best. Why not choose to idolize individuals that actually have had meaningful impact on society?

I like your example of Paris Hilton...good reality check for those who obsess over her. Ha!
Anytime I think it'd be cool to meet a star, and then I'd wonder if I'd be able to talk to them normally, I have to remind myself that they are just people. People who have appeared on TV, but people nonetheless.

Haha, thank you!
I am myself guilty of being "star struck" when I run into a celebrity. Afterwards I'm always disgusted with myself though. It must be really difficult--not being able to leave your house without bringing an entourage and your local troop of paparazzi with you.
