Should SAT Scores Matter?

Tagged:  •

I'm a high school sophomore and all I hear is this talk about the SATs. I just don't get it. Most people say that it's a measure of your intelligence and what you've learned in your years in high school. So, the purpose of this test is to tell how smart you are within a certain time limit? I definitely don't believe that the SATs are necessary to judge you when they pick students for their school.

So if a student was the smartest kid in school with a 4.0, and they bombed the SAT, what's that say about them? Now, if a less intelligent student took the test and did well, out of the two who would you pick as someone who works for a college? Would you base them on the SAT score or their GPA?

I would choose their GPA not just because it's a high number, but because it shows hard work.

I agree that hard work is more important that intelligence because I know a lot of people in the gifted program at my old high school who are so lazy.

Plus you may be smart but your school never taught the specific things that you were tested on in the SAT because that is what happened with me. Thankfully I did well on the ACT though.

I think SATs are just a way to measure your intelligence. They do not really factor in the fact that you cant study for the SATs like a regular exam nor do they factor the fact that some people get nervous on the test.

In my opinion I believe that if you can maintain a high average and score at least 1300+ you can get into an IVY league or prestigious college/university. Though I think it should be based more on your actual academics, skills, extracurricular activities and work experience while maintaining a 3.0 + gpa out of 4.0.

But try to do well on the SAT - essay, math and verbal sections! i wish you luck. And it's best to take it 3x. Along with some AP courses, honor classes, and SAT IIs

yeah i def agree with you. i never liked all this standarized testing. and it doesnt just stop with the SATs. Theres all these grad school tests like MCATs GMATS LSATs....
