Correcting one of my old blogs.....

I had posted a blog about a month ago about songs with lyrics that are degrading and immoral towards women. I still stand and say that those type of songs shouldn't be recorded. Of course, there really isn't much that I can do about that because of the freedom of speech law, but I think younger children should be more protected from those lyrics.

However, I have to correct myself about my blog. The way I worded things made it sound like I am oblivious to the fact that certain songs that female artists record make themselves sound promiscuous as well. Therefore, I am now correcting myself in saying that, I do realize that some female artists record degrading lyrics as well. And once again, I say that women need to stand up and say, "Stop treating us like we're property." Not every girl is a slut, and the lyrics that artists record (men and women) make it sound like we are. The same thing is happenening to guys. Us girls that want a good guy are very judgemental (I know I am) because we are being told that the only thing guys care about is sex. But I've actually known some pretty good guys that care about more than just that.

Like I said before, there really is nothing that I alone can do about these degrading lyrics, but maybe if everyone got together and took a stand, something could be done.

"but I think younger children should be more protected from those lyrics." - I think we are protecting the children from too much already. Over-protection from things you can't change won't help them.

Keeping things like this from being recorded won't do any good (except piss people off as they lose their freedom of speech to protect your children).

If you don't like a certain song, my suggestion is don't listen to it. However, how do you expect to teach your children a value of self-worth if they are never exposed to these song lyrics, or with people who believe in these song lyrics?

Not to mention, over-protecting your kids will lead them to rebellion. If you want your kids to grow up to be conservative (as you appear to be) then you have to start them off semi-liberal and not hide them away from everything. Rather, let them try every thing and if they get hurt, they won't try it again.

And believe a little more in your teachings. Unless you think your child is going to be so absolutely weak-willed that one song will completely wipe his brain clean of every thing you taught him prior.

Fanaile said it all.

All I can add is that if you value yourself and teach your children to value themselves, those lyrics aren't going to affect them one way or another. Women and sex have long been popular musical subjects and not always in the best of light. Today is no different (see http://progressiveu.org/214353-i-help-in-the-degradation-of-women for more on that).
