I consider myself 'in the know' of current events around the globe but mainly regarding the U.S. I like politics, I follow politics and I have controversial opinions about certain political subjects. However, I don't like to express or debate my opinions with my peers.
Why?
I used to be so quick to jump into a heated debate but over the past couple years I've held back and just watched as my peers 'debated' certain taboo topics. Now, however, not so much. It seems like every time I go to voice my opinion someone just HAS to argue with me, not debate, argue. It seems like my peers don't understand the difference. I think it might have something to do with the lack of emotional control at this age but I'm no psychologist.
But, on to my core topic. I notice that in many 'debates' lead by my peers I hear the same thing again and again. All conservative views, all pro- Bush administration, all pro- life, all ant- gay marriage, blah blah, but why? I blame it on the suburban atmosphere as well as parental programming constructed at a young age. I don't think my generation (or at least my peers within my humble suburban town) are capable of thinking for themselves. Most opinions are fabricated my the media, the parents... just totally constructed by one-dimensional thoughts and scope vision.
I don't debate anymore. Why debate when the thoughts aren't original? Why the opponent doesn't know how to debate?

I know what you mean. I used to sit back myself and think that the other kdis debating were more intelligent when it turns out they were more ignorant than I was ever. I understand why you don't bother to debate much anymore, I mean what will it prove. I just can't stand to see other people believe lies and such, this is what motivates me. Someone has to make people realize :).

What gets annoying is when people argue with you just for the sake of disagreeing. And you're right: people get all their information from one source, often times biased ones, and can't construct a valid debate. Our age group is also obbsessed with being right, and winning an argument or debate.
