I absolutely detest reality tv, but I'm absolutely addicted to it. America's Next Top Model, in particular. What I hate about it is that it's not about real life at all! No one's life is like what they portray on tv. It's absolutely ridiculous!
The people they choose to put on these reality tv shows emulate the exact sort of image we should avoid giving to today's generation. I saw commercials for the new season of the Real World that had the casting call interviews on it. These people are narcissistic, combatative, conceited, stubborn, and they're purposefully chosen for having all of these qualities. That gives the message that you're considered cool and confident if you're a jerk.
And the fact that all of these shows are positively contrived makes it even worse. Kids are seeing that they'll be FAVORED, not just accepted, but FAVORED if they're dicks! I hate that. How can kids be expected to grow up to be functioning members of society if all they've been exposed to in tv is that it's good to be crappy people!
Survivor promotes backstabbing, as does ANTM, The Hills, the Real World, hell, all of them. As long as you're attractive you can have any personality trait you want. You can be cruel, snobby, conceited, whatever, as long as you're hot. Being intelligent, creative, or artistic is underrated lately. Being thin and pretty is what's in, and now they have to make shows about being thin and pretty. It's disgusting. If they're going to make a show called the Real World, they should put real people on it. None of these "reality" shows are truly representative of real life. It's frustrating...
I'm going to go turn off my tv now...

I hate reality TV as a whole but I know those guilty pleasures lure you sometimes. I have been won over the absolutely ridiculous "Rock of Love" and "The Girls Next Door". I can't believe I participate in any version of reality TV. I don't think I will ever become a true addict, watching indiscriminantly, but I have my few....
I have to say that I'm not a true "addict" either, but that's because I don't watch a lot of tv. In fact, during the school year, I really only watch movies on the weekend. But, it being spring break and all, there's nothing to do...
i hate reality shows too.
Last night I was doing some research and randomly found the ratings for reality shows. I was curious to see what lame show made it to Number One (I figured it would be either Survivor or some MTV show. Surprisingly, the two top shows were Dirty Jobs and MythBusters. I love these shows! They might be essentially "reality TV", but you don't see pathetic people competing. You actually learn stuff from these shows. Good job, Discovery Channel!

Oh, dude, yeah. Mythbusters and pretty much anything on Discover Channel is NOT what I consider "reality tv" because you learn stuff from it, and it's gimmick is more than "So, which one of you hot, promiscuous girls wants to do me the most?" or "So, which of you is shallow and pretty enough that you can do nothing with your life but model?"
Discover Channel kicks ass...
.. or "How bout we stick a bunch of washed-up celebrities in a mansion and see how well they cope with each other?" Or "let's rip off a show we've already made by simply putting it in another location!"
Did you know that reality shows are so fake that they actually hire actors to play the parts of these "real" people? It's true. I heard about it in acting class.

Ugh! That's disgusting! Although, being an actress myself (a bad one, but hey, I dig it!) I'm not sure I'd turn down any acting gig. I'd like to think that I wouldn't stoop that low, however.
i hate to admit it but I love reality TV. I think most us do even though like you said promote the wrong things for our society. The production staff of these shows intentionally hire people who will create drama, drama, DRAMA to lure people into these addicting shows.
I agree. I like it and I hate it all at once. It's absolutely ridiculous, but there's something about it. It reminds me of a televised psych experiment, except with no scientific basis, whatsoever.
you stated that the people they choose to put on these reality tv shows emulate the exact sort of image we should avoid giving to today's generation. the way that i see it is that today's generation is being negatively impacted in an infinite number of ways, regardless if you choose to see them or not, other than reality tv. and yes it can be seen that reality tv is a huge part of that, but still there are other things contributing, such as forms of advertisement, political decisions, music, etc. it ALL has its bad parts. quite honestly the people who have created these terrible reality shows are geniuses for the fact that they have created the ultimate loop for people. something that they love to hate. you hate it but you love it, and you don't know why. my opinion would be because we like seeing something that is totally ridiculous and is not of reality. and the fact that they call it reality is ridiculous! but i think that most of society doesn't understand the concept of self control. they like things and like it until they don't like it, and then they are bored, and can't/won't think of anything else to do, but mope to a great or not so great extent.
speaking of reality let's live the reality of life for once. in order for life to have some type of longevity we need to be doing something, wheather it be good or bad it has to happen and conflict with other things, so we have stuff to do (let's face it boredom SUCKS!). anyway, what kind of reality are we, ourselves, living by being stuck on these reality tv shows? we are doing nothing but observing something that is... not worth being observed? hmmmm well in a way yes. in a way no. but i think reality tv gives an interesting perspective on things that most people can't actually get by living in actual reality. if anything reality tv is giving us a huge insight on what not to do in certain situations giving us wisdom of some sort, but this is not to say that everyone has this kind of mind set.
I believe this. most people are content with boredom. it has the lowest short term risks involved than any other activity. if we are involving ourselves in activity that requires more action and less boredom we increase the risks of something unsatisfactory happening. I think the best thing to do when you don't want something is to simply not notice it unless it just absolutely demands your attention. by hating it you are causing drama on something you yourself put into your life. and since you don't want to hate yourself (cuz after all, your decisions do belong to you), you will wind up loving that effing decision that led you to feel so bad. you might as well, you spent this much time paying attention to it, you might as well keep on going. CREATING ZEE ULTIMATE LOOP! See they have really made something since you are paying attention to it. AND not only are you paying attention to it, you are a huge marketing puppet by hating it so much and telling everyone how much it is messing up society! it sucks!
So, a lot of that pretty much boiled down to, "don't whine, you're giving them what they want: attention" ? Am I correct?
And of course unsatisfactory contributions to the behavior of society comes from other stimuli! I don't think I ever insinuated that it didn't!
Okay, here's what I was trying to get to by giving a specific and ludicrous example: media, all forms, is turning us into a bunch of sociopathic, egotistical, self-centered bastards. As if we weren't bad enough already... You can argue me on this, but human nature is pretty much concerned with "me, first and foremost!" This leads to some crappy personality traits, and media is emulating that almost constantly.
nah if you wanna whine and take up that part of society that's perfectly fine. and there is nothing wrong with that. and no you didn't insinuate it but you also didn't not insinuate it so its up for one's own interpretation. And since human nature is already selfish to begin with it has nothing to do but to be influenced by those things in which they are putting into their lives. in this case it would be reality tv, which portrays humans in to some extent a reality that we created, which is obviously going to make them selfish, and display selfishness to other people. Posting a blog is just as selfish. holding argument is selfish. i think that there is hardly any denying that.
this is fun.

I was wondering why I was getting bombarded by trios. Then I read your other comment. I understand and not a problem.
L'anyhoodle... fine, I'm selfish. I'm a human. Moot point. But, watching that selfishness mirrored back to me every time I turn on my TV (to a reality show or stupid what-nots) could make it grow and validate my bad behavior, couldn't it? Therefore it could just worsen what's already there and make people even crappier. So it's still a problem influencing people. The shows are exacerbating bad characteristics. So, while yes, we are indeed dealing with a problem WE created, by being human, perhaps those who realize that should put an end to it. And maybe even that is selfish, because, hey, people like reality tv.
You can keep going around and around for days. Critical thinking/arguing with people is fun. It made me want to be a lawyer for a while... I got over it when I realized the amount of schooling involved. : P
yeah true. but if its one thing it will be another. and yeah arguing sucks to the extent of becoming a lawyer, but idn i guess i'm only doing this blogging thing for the scholarship, and other than just to be obnoxious (I think I spelled that right), i thought it would be best to put some kind of input to make things contraversial. oh yeah, and educate myself ofcourse.
Ahhh, I see. I'm doing it for the scholarship too, but I messed it up somehow, I'm sure, so I probably won't get the points. Ah, well.
Hey, arguing can be beneficial to all because it helps people consider things from every angle. Question away.
okay so my question is, if we get points for putting comments up, if we technically just post comments that mean trully nothing at all, does that mean that we are able to eligible to win? i am only presuming that that is the case.
No idea. I'm not sure if they check for content or not. That'd be a hella lot of blogs and comments.
the discovery channel should be THE ONLY CHANNEL.
Maybe not the only channel... How will I watch Law and Order SVU?
you show a very valid point. i think i got all hyped up on planet earth i just forgot about everything else. and i apologize for the quantative comments, computer lag... if i can even call it lag. but anyway, hopefully you can understand.
I LOVE PLANET EARTH!! best show ever!
