Apple's Recycling Program

Tagged:  •

Apple said Wednesday that it was expanding its computer take-back program by offering free recycling of old PCs when purchasing a new Mac. Starting today, the program would give its US customers the option of doing so regardless of the old PC's manufacturer.

The program is a fulfillment of a promise made by the company in April. Facing criticism by environmental activists, Apple struck back by announcing the program and saying it had been named a "Forward Green Leader" by the Sierra Club.

The club gives the title to the top ten environmentally progressive companies. Apple Computers has been operating the recycling program since 2001, and has recycled nearly 90 percent of the electronic equipment it has collected.

It is good to see big companies doing their part for the environment. Plus it helps people out to get rid of old stuff. I know I just was trying to get rid of an old computer and its hard because no one wants to buy it and we arent allowed to throw it in the garbage can.

Yeah, I know what you mean about it being hard to get rid of them. We get in trouble for throwing them away in the garbage, and noone wants to take them. People end up just leaving them on the corner of streets, which is annoying. Where I live there is this event once a year where you can drop off old, unwanted tv's and computers for free.

We had to keep ours, even after it stopped working. Getting rid of it is too much of a hassle. Apple is doing a good thing, helping us, and getting rid of the old computers
