Many are complaining about high gas prices however not many are looking at actual viable alternatives.
Fixing our energy problem in the United States isn’t as easy as bio fuels, I noticed a lot of people seem to believe that all our energy problems will go away with the advent of this technology. The truth is in order to completely converge to bio we would pay a steep economic price, one I am sure that many especially those who don’t have the money will make. Most current car models will require modifications to accept bio fuel and many older vehicles will have to undergo further modifications to the intake system as well. The middle class and lower class would have to pay for these modifications. The alternative to bio, fuel hydrogen seems to be too far away from conventionality.
The only alternative would to be to localize oil production which is possible, but too many object due to environmental reasons. We can’t use oil from Anwar, and although we could commit ourselves to offshore drilling, other nations have already started including a joint venture between Mexico, China in the Gulf of Mexico. Not too mention we would have to invest into the equipment to do the actual mining.
Public transportation opens up new problems as well.
We could try the route we tried in the late 70s. We could try to make cars more energy efficient like we tried in the 70, however in the end all that does is postpone the problem for another day as well as a whole decreasing safety. (In order to make a car more energy efficient you must remove weight, as a result weight, which would have made the car more capable of surviving the crash, is removed)
I guess the problem with energy will not be solved completely, but we will still get short changed somehow.
I wish we somehow could find a soultion. I know each of us could do our part by walking or riding our bike instead of riding in the car. But I wish there was more we can do.
Actually our electric company has two options now. Solar Power electricity or Coal stuff. You can pay a slightly higher price for the solar power energy or have the cheaper coal stuff. Or you can do half and half. I though this was a great idea. I tried to convince my family to go solar power but my father refuses and my mom doesn't press the issue. At least I know what I am going to do in my home.
