Longest standing protest

I am still writing from DC and wanted to blog on another moving experience I have had here. This morning was our group White House tour, but it was not the White House that amazed me, but the longest standing protest happening outside that was awe inspiring. Many people may know of this, but across the street from the white house sits a small tent. Two people, Concepcion and Thomas, live in this tent, and since 1981 have been holding the longest standing 24 hour protest against nuclear weapons and violence in the world. I could not believe that someone would be so dedicated to that cause to give up their entire life to try and make a point. I began to wonder whether or not the 24 hour protest was really all that effective. I wondered if them trying to work for an organization would be more effective or if living a normal life and raising their children to be peaceful, would have been more of a contribution to the world. I quickly decided that was a stupid thought. I thought about how many people have passed by Thomas and Concepcion during the past 26 years. If they affected just one person every few days to live a more peaceful life, they have made a world of change happen. I admire their efforts to make this a more peaceful place to live in. If anyone supports the troops in this country, it is those two who remain 24 hours a day trying to bring them home to their families and safety. They are great role models to all of us, and I hope one day I can be as dedicated to something, anything as they are. Enjoy the sun and beautiful day because that is what I am about to do.

amazing! i deeply admire people who can stick up for what they believe in, to the extent of sleeping in a tent in front of the white house.
