Living on a Prayer

Prayer in schools.... such a controversial topic in today's day and age. What I don't understand is why it had to be taken out of our schools altogether. We all hold the right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion as US citizens. Is it such a big deal to let those who want to pray, pray and to let those who don't want to just sit around?

Schools should give those students who wish to pray a time to get into a group or pray individually for a few minutes at the start of the day. Everyone else who wishes to not participate can just sit in their desks and converse with the others until the students are done praying. Then the teacher can teach, the students can learn, and all is well in the world.

It's ridiculous to me that one person's opinion affects the freedoms of millions of kids today. If it is such an issue for them, then they should have their kid stand outside and not participate in the prayer. Even worse, the parents are usually the ones who have the problem with the praying, not the students themselves. The Constitution grants us the rights to these freedoms and they have been taken away for reasons so miniscule, that they aren't even worth it.

The government needs to take action to put prayer back into public schools and give time for prayer to those students who wish to participate. It's only fair to those students because they are US citizens and deserve to hold their freedoms and express them.

Who said students can't pray in school? Students can pray whenever they want to, and noone has ever said that they can't. The issue is whether public employees can lead students in prayer. Why should there be a time set aside in the morning specifically for prayer in school? Does that make any sense to you at all? School is for learning. If you wish to pray while at school noone will stop you, but it seems ridiculous to demand that the school set aside specific times for you to pray.

Look, You can't have any prayer in school because religion is not only against the constitution it is a danger to every one who has honor that is non-religous. I not only think that there should not be prayer in school I am against religion of all kinds! Now having people pray beside me in a public school takes away my rights. The constitution was not written for the many or the conformasts, it was written for the few and the dissidents. I just hope the majority lets us be as free as they want to be.

I agree but Religion is essential. It teaches morality, it gives hope when we needed it most. It gives us something to believe in, if we have nothing to believe in, nothing to look forward to after death, it gives us purpose, without it what reason do we have to even exist?

You are allowed to pray in school, but on your free time. What about people who have to pray at different times and kids who would try to take advantage of this.

Just because the government says that public schools can't have organized praying time doesn't mean that students/faculty aren't allowed to pray.

Let the individual decide when or how to pray or not pray. That is not a responsibility of the federal government.

they have a set time for people to be able to meditate, I for one would feel really uncomfortable if the teacher led a prayer session at the beginning of class and everybody was praying but me, I would feel weird knowing everybody would be thinking bad about me because I don't worship god. I worship the God and the Goddess, and the Universe =]

Plus, meditation takes more than 5 minutes and thats what I do I meditate, I perfom rituals honoring the God and the Goddess, I need more time than 5 minutes, so why should the school WASTE time for my own needs, huh? I go to school to learn, to study so I can fulfill my dreams, not to listen to people praying.

I agree with what you're saying; but if people want to pray, why don't they pray in not so public places (like a restroom, etc.)?
