Save our school system/ Abolish Elementary School

The Answer to our schools problem, abolish elementary school. Every parent who has graduated from a high school public or private is capable of teaching their own child though elementary school. The curriculum of math is just multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and fractions. English is just spelling tests and learning to write, and learning how to talk. Physical education requirements could be met by sports. A few schools could be open for special children and then those special children would get the help they sorely need to live as normal a life as possible for them.
The problem with abolishing elementary schools is that many parents need to drop their kid off somewhere for 8 hours so they can go to work. Daycare is expensive, and hard to find. If suddenly 400 kids needed to go to daycare in any one place there would be chaos.
Maybe if we turned the elementary schools into gov’t run low cost daycare fired the elementary teachers and hired lower cost people to run the daycare, then ran the elementary schools online, with one teacher per 60 online students. Let the parents do their job teaching their own elementary kid. With computers getting cheaper by the minute and cable internet this could come true by 2015.

Um, what problem would that solve?

How would kids be taught social skills? Putting a bunch of unsocialized pre-teens into a middle school setting is just asking for disaster.

"A few schools could be open for special children and then those special children would get the help they sorely need to live as normal a life as possible for them."

But, if you abolish elementary schools, going to elementary school wouldn't be normal.

"Every parent who has graduated from a high school public or private is capable of teaching their own child though elementary school."

Not every parent graduates from high school. Mine didn't. And some parents are abusive and neglectful. And there are some that are single parents who have to work to feed their kids and pay for their house and everything. When you're doing that, you can't teach them too.

I'm sorry, but that could never be possible, much less by 2015.

Of course, this could be satire of cutting funding to art and sports programs in schools for the sake of the school system. Hmmm......I don't think it takes a genius to see that it could be. And, if so, good job, just thought I'd get my opinion in either way.

IT wasn't satire. They would have sports programs and reading programs though the library. It could be done. Not easily and maybe not by 2015. But they are not just cutting arts and sports programs here in MI. They are cutting whole schools. So why not just take it a step futher. And put whole schools online one at a time.:)

GO ME----Plant A TREE !!!!!

You think they should/ could make elementary school age kids sit in front of a computer? Do you know any elementary school kids? Not trying to sound snappy there, but honestly this is ridiculous.

And who would fund these sports programs? Taxpayers? Because not all families would be able to afford them, and would it be fair to leave the disadvantaged kids out? Kind of defeats the purpose of getting rid of the schools doesn't it?

For that matter, not all families are going to be able to afford computers, no matter how cheap they get. Homeless kids go to public schools, so it doesn't make sense to force parents who can't afford shelter for their kids to buy a computer. So, are taxpayers going to pay for those too? Again, it defeats the purpose entirely.

Then there's the fact that some parents aren't willing and/or able to teach their kids or keep them at home that much. It would also mean that kids would have all different levels of quality in their education. That would wreak havoc on middle and high schools.

As for firing teachers, to bring in day care workers, what's the point? Teachers don't make that much as it is, so the problem with funding schools is not paying the teachers. If you created government-funded daycares, you'd have to provide three meals a day for a lot of kids whose parents work odd schedules. Not to mention all the younger siblings tax dollars would suddenly be responsible for babysitting, ones with diapers, baby formula, beds, etc. Again, it would defeat the purpose of closing the schools. Not to mention the number of unemployed teachers there would be left without anyway to feed THEIR kids.

And it doesn't solve any problems. Middle schools and high schools cost soooo much more to run than elementary schools.

"littleklg" said it all. I agree! 'nough said. . .

As littleklg said, what would this solve exactly? Sure, elementary school wasn't exactly very pleasant for me, but it was still necessary.

Not all parents are capable of teaching that sort of material to their children. Just because they might know it, doesn't mean they'll be able to teach it. This has been proven true with my parents. Also, not everyone is able to receive a sufficient amount of education to be able to teach their own children those skills.

In my case I got a double whammy, since my parents can't speak or read English very well. So, having them try to teach me would only lead to not be able to have the skills necessary to go into secondary education.

Again, what's the point of closing the schools down if they're only going to be used as a daycare? In a way, elementary school is already daycare. The children just happen to learn there.

Without elementary school, kids would be running wild everywhere! It would be horrible and parents probably won't have time to take care of their own children. By having a low cost people teaching young kids stuff, it's highly ineffective and the quality of education would be MUCH lower. Every grade and every part of the school system is necessary. We just need to hire better teachers.
