Universities are Racist!!!!

Racism is alive and well!!! Who can deny that we still live in a racist world. Yes I believe that people are often treated differently and judged based on the color of their skin, but what about colleges and Universities? Are they even being racist? Yes they are! I'm so tired of trying to find scholarships, but my options are limited because I'm a normal white girl. How is it not racist to offer a scholarship to someone just because they are black or Mexican, but not to someone just because they are white? Is this not being racist? I believe now that the most disadvantaged person in the U.S. today is white males. People just assume that they have everything and don't need help, and assume that other races do? I don't know about you, but I think this is horrible. There are many many hard working people of all races. People should be equally considered based on merit and need not on color! If a school offers scholarships based on race, than they should also have one for whites! Its the only way to be fair! My best friend is African American, and it makes me so angry when she can be lazy in high school not really caring about her grades. Her parents have plenty of money for her because she is an only child. They take her on trips around the world!!! Then when we go to college she gets money to pay for it just because of her skin color. Then there is me who worked so hard to get a 4.0 and stressed many nights about homework. I have seven siblings and so my parent’s money is split and they can't help me pay for any of my schooling. I've never been on an airplane, let alone another country! Now don't get me wrong I love my friend and I'm happy for her. i just wish I was given an equal chance!

It is truly absurd that you have trouble because you're white, though I would think you're being female would have helped. You should keep looking, though, if you really had a 4.0 there has to bes omething. My little sister had a 3.6 or something, and she got a good scholarship. The most important thing is is that you've worked as hard as you have and that will lead to success beyond your lazy friends. College degrees are a dime a dozen, your personal qualities will pull you ahead. I completely agree, though, about letting in underachievers because of their color, it isn't just unfair to people like you, but it's detrimental to the future of the country. If you let a student in who is an inferior worker in order to meet some kind of coda, then that student is going to bring that same laziness into the workplace, and with a degree so possibly an important job. Geez, this country is so screwed up right now. Keep your head up.

"I believe now that the most disadvantaged person in the U.S. today is white males."
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the fact that you believe this... Who has power in this country? It isn't all white males, but most of the powerful ARE white males. Have you ever heard of white privilege or male privilege?

Why are you so bitter and angry? Do you not realize that there are millions of dollars of scholarship money available? Have you tried looking? No, there aren't scholarships available exclusively to "whites". There really aren't as high a number as you seem to think for "racist" scholarships. If you do have 4.0, you should have no problem finding a few scholarships. Financial Aid will help too, especially if you stay in the state that you currently live in.

The scholarships you are so mad about- the ones based on race- are still scholarships and people still have to work for them. It's not like you check a box saying you're a minority and you automatically get the scholarship. They too are based on grades, financial need, and usually an essay. A lot of the time, the fund or foundation donating the scholarship is a part of that minority and saw a need.

Racism IS everywhere, and you can't expect it to end at a university campus. However, I disagree with your point of view. At my university, many of the non-white students are made to feel like they shouldn't even be there, most likely because of ideas like your own, that they got in simply because of the color of their skin and not because they worked hard.

As for your friend, it sounds like her parents are paying her way through school, or at least part of it. It's not about race there, it's about social class.

I completely agree with you.

Personally, I have yet to come across a SINGLE scholarship that excludes people on the basis of their skin color. Even scholarships "for" black people, etc, allow applications from people regardless of color, they simply expect you to somehow be helping the black community or something like that.

This article discusses some scholarships that are white only:

What is your ethnic background? There are scholarships available for people with different backgrounds and heritages. There are also many scholarships available only to women. It takes a lot of hard work and researching, but you would be surprised how many scholarships are available to you.

I also do not think that scholarships offered only to Latinos or only to African Americans are racist at all. I think it is all about ethnic pride. Whoever wants to sponsor a scholarship should be able to place restrictions on their applicants, especially if all the sponsor is trying to do is to promote higher education for people who share the same ethnic background as themselves.

It's much more difficult to find a scholarship for whites than other races. That's racist right there.

Is there any data that supports that?

I've been filling out a lot of scholarship questionnaires, and none have asked my race.

I hear this claim all the time, but I've never seen anything that backs it up. What I DO know for a fact is that a much higher percentage of the white population goes to college than the percentage of any population of color, except Asian students. So even if there are more scholarships out there for kids of color (but there aren't), it is justified if it helps get a more commensurate number of students of color in college.

I think the numbers of whatever race in college are skewed due to class. Growing up poor will be a deterrent in going to college, and many students don't know what options they may have with scholarships and grants. Race factors in because there are a disproportionate number of poor black or Latino families compared to white.

Absolutely. Oh, and by "this claim," I meant the claim that it is harder for white students to get scholarships, not anything you said. I realized I didn't make that very clear.

I'd wanted to put that in there anyway. I've noticed that very little thought goes into some posts, and I like to give people something to think about that's not so black and white.

a Sean Hannity-type talking about this on Fox News. He seemed to be under the impression that there would be backlash against him if he started an "Irish American scholarship" or some other "whites only" scholarship. He should have put his money were his mouth was, as an Irish American, I could testify that I need the money, and certainly wouldn't think less of Hannity for giving it to me.

The reason universities have scholarships like these is because minority enrollment is still at a low, in large part due to money. However, there are plenty of non-race related scholarships, this website offers one. I mean, there are scholarships out there for people who can make a duck call, for short people, tall people, lefties, pro-life, pro-choice, anti-death penalty, hunters, and so on.

I hardly think being white is going to keep anyone out of college.
