I came across this link
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=browse_usc&docid=Cite:+4USC8
citing the US Code of regulations on how to properly respect the USA Flag. I was amazed at how often I have seen this code broken.
For example...Did you know...
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.
The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform...The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on
the left lapel near the heart.
So remember to respect the flag. And once a flag has become too torn or tattered as to diminish its strength of message, the law suggest you dispose of it properly - by burning it!

It should also never touch the ground. If it has, it must be immediately burnt.
I'm pretty sure I had to know every single one of those requirements to teach the flag ceremony to a bunch of little Girl Scouts. So yes, I did know!
Also:
The flag cannot be used on any type of box, napkin, plate, or other item that is meant for single use and then discard.
That was probably my favourite.
