Do You believe in racism??

I belive that racism is still alive and kicking in the United Staes. And i think that we can see it in every aspect of our lives.

I personally have experienced racism first hand as Im sure many people have. My experience was when I was still young, a freshman in high school. I was in a mixed class meaning that there were all grades in the class and there was this one boy who was white and older. He was a class clown and everyone laughed at his jokes including me. One day we were having a discussion, I dont even remember what it was about. Anyways he made the comment that he would never touch me becuase i was brown and "dirty". That was a horrible comment and I did want to cry but that wasnt the worst thing. The person who I called my best friend and who was also white did not console me in anyway. As a matter if fact, when I went to her and tried to get some kind of sympathy she told me to get over it. That was the real blow. I had to deal with the reality of the world that is there are still racist people out in the world. Whether its between different cultures or in the same culture, it still exists.

Which brings me to my point. How about society? We have Black History month and Hispanic History month. I am not even sure if there is an Asian American month or Native American month. Isnt that kind of like racism? There is so much focus on Black History month and when I was still in school during that month it was like overwhelming how much we learned. And yet when Hispanic history month rolled around they threw some names out but it wasnt as big of a deal.

Im not sure how I stand on this matter and want to know some of your opinions. And if it is not postive then plese dont comment.

So you are saying ... that you should have been immune to the clowns teasing because you are black ... and also your friend didn't support give you the support that you needed when you were told that you were black ... and instead told you what she would have told I would have told you if you had been a friend and were crying about any joke made against you. The clowns joke was racism ... but you make your friends actions to be racism. She was just being a horrible friend, not a racist.

Further more, no one agrues for a white history month ... why is that? I would like a month dedicated to all the great white people.

every day a celebration of whites, every thing we learn from the beginning of American History, the framers of the Constitution, to Lincoln, To the WHITE Feminists to Everyone Loves the Kennedys, and everything in between, IS NOT our lives and our learning DOMINATED by WHITES?
AND every day that racism and discrimination exists it is an attest to the greatness of a majority and the majority in this country is WHITES (FACT)

--- somehow I always thought that every day, every one should celebrate their identity.. WHAT is the point of everyone making a big deal of "official months," I'll celebrate who I am everyday, thank you very much...and so should you.....

Ok so to start off I am not black I am Hispanic and nobody should be immune to racism or any racist remarks and I dont believe that I said that at any part of the blog. Second, I dont understand what you are trying to say about my friend. If someone came up to your friend and said something like that you would just shrug it off? And I am not saying she is racist I am just pointing out that it was crappy that she didnt stick up for me in a racist situation especially since she was my "best friend". ANd the point is that there should be no months dedicated to any one specific race. It just shouldn't be that way.

I think that there is Black History month, Hispanic Month, etc... and every other month is white history month.

People who haven't had this happen to them at least once, they try but may not understand how much it emotionally hurts.
They talk about how one person is stupid or that's just in one school or one instance
ACTUALLY---HELL NO...It exists in Every part of our life, every sector has made RACE a significant distinction between people and groups of people
DON'T let them tell you otherwise--
IT'S BS to say RACISM is DEAD...IT EXISTS against all kinds of people
BUT the majority who are marginalized are almost always a type of minority

I totally agree that as much as one would like to sympathize, you cant unless oyu have been in the situation. It is hard to deal with and handle..especially at a young age.

They said to her why are you so dark? and brown. LITTLE KIDS, and it was not like they were commenting or surprised at her skin color, they said it in a manner that they were disgusted by her darkness
I understand that kids are not racist or aware of what they are doing at that young age but the fact of the matter is that in certain schools where there aren't many people of different backgrounds, People make RIDICULOUSLY HURTFUL comments and it is accepted

I would say that the reason no one is arguing for a white history month is that the majority of history that any schoolchild is exposed to is white history. We hear all the time about Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt and Helen Keller. Never do we hear about Caesar Chávez, Evita Perón, or Jorge Santayana (though we all know his quote regarding the nature of history). Never do we hear of Feng Shan Ho, Dalip Singh Saund, or Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Never do we hear of Chief Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, or Chief Metacom/Prince Phillip.

Also, perhaps I am wrong, but it seems to me that salvarez0718 is Latino-American not black...? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

As a person of multi-racial background, I am well-aware that racism is still alive and well in this country. And that it is not just whites. I have been discriminated against as much by Asians (and perhaps more) for my mixed heritage than by Caucasians. My mixed-race uncle (my mother's family is EXTREMELY diverse--he's mixed black and white) almost killed himself while in college in progressive New Jersey because of the racial discrimination he faced from both blacks and whites. To me, it's embarrassing that we have to keep returning to this, that we must constantly fight to be treated as eqaul citizens, not only against whites but against other minorities.

Still, I would ask, salvarez0718, if you called the "clown" out on his comment or referred him to any higher authority. It shouldn't be your place to highlight the racist remarks of a peer, but if a teacher refuses, sometimes you must be the one to step up to the plate, no?

Ok so to make this clear I am Hispanic not black. And I did not report the situation becuase I was young and wasnt in my right mind. It all happened so fast. but I do agree that I think that everyday is like white heritage day. Every day we learn something about a white person. ANd the point is that I dont think that we should have months dedicated to any one race. And it is true that within our own races there is racism and that is sad because how can any other race respect us if we dont even respect each other.

I think that maybe the reason why Hispanic history month isn't as stressed as black history month is because the situation with immigration is one that is more new than the issues that blacks faced. Slavery is a very touchy time and so people stress more on how black people should be treated more equal. I think over time Hispanic History month will probably surface as more important.

I also think that many people like to deny that there is racism still thriving in America. It's everywhere and I think in order for us to grow away from that we need to admit and realize that it is a part of our society. This may be why your friend said that to you because she herself does not realize the severity of the comment. Also, she may not know what it's like for somebody to say hateful words to you even if it is in a some what jokingly manner.

It is true that immigration is now booming again but that does not make it a new topic. And that is not the only thing that Hispanics have contribued to in this country. And what about other races like asians or native americans?? no one race is more important or worthy than the other. specific months are not fair.

halfnhalfgyrl's picture

Of course that is not the only thing that Hispanics have contributed, and of course all races are equal. I believe that both of those are correct. I just think that the U.S. is so focused on trying to make up for the past that it is keeping us from establishing current equality amongust races. Some people may resent other races because of the special treatment they get. Many people do wonder why there isn't a history month for all cultures because every culture has a different history. I agree with this, but that government hasn't recognized that yet. I think as time goes on either history months for different races will be eliminated or every culture will have their time.
