Why does the world critize Plus-Size model?

mmontaria4eva's picture

Is being a plus-size model such a bad thing? It really isn't. There is nothing wrong for a plus-size woman who feel they are petty and attractive to want to model. I want to give credit to Tyra Banks for allowing plus-size women to get a chance to see what is like to be a model. Unfournately, none of them ever won but, did went on to be very successful like, Tocarra from Cycle 3.The world can be cruel to plus-size women. They will smile, in your face, then slander you like its nobody buisness.

Take for example,Janice Dickinson in Cycle 3 with Tocarra. Upon Tocarra's audition she told Tocarra, that she can be America's Next Top Model's first plus-size model, eagerly cheering her on.But, what happens later on in the show? Janice begins to lose faith in Tocarra because of her size. How cruel is that. There was even an altercation between Tyra and Janice because of this.

Another example will have to be when Ms. Tyra Banks retired from modeling and begin to pick up a few pounds. The press attacked her. There were pictures of her in magazines, on enterainment shows, and tabloids. These pictures consist of her in a bathing suit with fat joked in captions as well as pictures of Tyra possibly having cellulite. And if she, so what, who cares!!! That's why I commend her the comment her for the comment she made on the Tyra Show.

So, to the Plus-Size women everywhere, if you feel like you have what it takes to be model; Go for it!!!

as long as a person is healthy i don't see the issue with a plus sized....anything. your right....who cares if someone has cellulite

Isn't Janice Dickinson the woman who took a lot of heat because she was yelling "you're too fat!" at her models? I really don't think the show is that progressive for models other than the super skinny tall girls with high cheeck bones. The girls look mostly the same, and when there is a girl who is different, she gets ostracized by the other girls and is judged more harshly than the others. One girl was lectured about her weight during judging and how she has handled it, but she only weighed just enough to be normal sized.

I am a plus size woman and ever since the scandel with the anti anorexia posters I am proud to flaunt my curves. This trend for the last decade to look like a skeleton because supermodels were doing it ...is unhealthy. A real woman is supposed to have curves...period!

I completely resent this statement.

There's not anything wrong with Plus Size (up to a certain point, of course), but I am no less a "real woman" than you even though I'm 5'5" and 110 pounds.

And no, I'm not anorexic, bulimic, or any other 'ic eating disorder there is, I don't under-eat (in fact, I probably do the opposite), and I don't over-exercise (although I do stay active because that's necessary to having a healthy body and lifestyle).

Please don't type in all caps. It has the connotation that you're screaming your message, and that's not exactly polite in everyday conversation. Also, using full words will make you actually sound as smart as you are, and the rest of us will greatly appreciate it.

Au contraire... using all caps means you're screaming on the internet. If you don't want to be considered to be screaming, don't use all caps.

I also can't show your intelligence... only you can do that. Keep in mind that the only representation we get of you is what you write. If you write like a 12 year old, you're going to be perceived as a 12 year old, even if you're 25. If you write like a college student, you'll generally be considered a college student, and college students should use proper punctuation and grammar.

I'm gonna have to agree with BE here. I'm large... not plus size, but large. And I'm overweight. By encouraging plus size models, aren't we doing the opposite of what we do by encouraging anorexic and sickly thin models?

I think it's important for girls to have a good body image, but only to a point. When it gets to the point that they become unhealthy in their weight, they need to be helped to get back to that healthy weight.

My cousin is quite large... easily obese. She's shorter than I am, and I would not be surprised if she weighed twice as much as I do. Her mother took her out of public school because she was being teased for her weight. She was put into a private school to prevent this. But I don't think people teasing her because she is so big is a bad thing. She already has a history of health problems... our grandparents both have diabetes, and our grandpa has undergone several heart surgeries, what I imagine is largely caused by his diet. She does not need to add the extra burden of obesity to her family history of disease. She needs to lose weight. Having plus size models, ones who are overweight and obese, is not good for her. She doesn't need to be proud of how much she weighs, she needs to lose that weight, just as I need to lose the few pounds to get back to a healthy weight.

I don't think models should be forced to conform to eating disorder induced weight standards. I think we should include real women in modeling, but not necessarily encourage plus size modeling. A woman with an appropriate BMI and body fat percentage should be the ideal, not one at either end of the weight spectrum.

I am smack dab in the middle of the healthy BMI range, and at a size12-14, I would be a plus sized model. I am completely healthy, in good shape, and not anything anyone could call fat. I think encouraging plus sized models who are healthy is great. And I think we should just call them "models," instead of having a special category for healthy people.

I do agree, though, that some of the plus sized models out there are not in a healthy weight range.

I'm in the 10-14 range for dress sizes (but I'm short, so my BMI is a bit higher than it should be), but I generally consider over 16 as plus size, since that's how they generally categorize them in stores. Extra-large shirts generally fit in the 16-18 range. Women in those dress size tend (though not always) to be overweight by BMI and/or body fat percentages (I tend to favor body fat percentage over BMI, since it's a better indicator of unhealthiness, but it's a bit harder to determine).

I guess I should have clarified that in my post... my idea of plus size is probably different from that of the modeling industry.

You've already been asked once within this thread to not type in all caps and to use whole words, so this isn't a second warning, but I'm asking you as well to please start writing properly. Typing in all caps is considered shouting and is difficult to read. Typing in chat-speak in a forum environment, such as this one, is also considered inappropriate and will get you ignored at best, and often you will not be taken seriously, regardless of how intelligent you actually are.

Not having the time is not an excuse, in my opinion. This isn't a chat room, so what is here will be here (unless it violates the ToS) when you finish doing what you need to do and have the time to write properly and edit your work. I promise, it will still be there.

Passionate about the topic? Great! But use accents (exclamation points, bold or italicized words, capitalized words) sparingly. They'll carry more weight if you don't use them all time.

We're not asking for perfection. A typo here or there, perhaps a slip into chat speak once in a while, we're all human. However, such things should be kept to a minimum. This isn't your English class, but this is a college-level, academically-targeted site and as such, there are certain standards that are asked of the members of the community.

Besides, look at how many responses, and the nature of those responses, you had when you took the time to write in a manner that people could read, versus when you decided to type like a 12 year old does to her friends on AOL messenger.

*Edited after I noticed the time stamps. I do agree with mvenus929, though, and still want to voice my views, as well.*
