Okay.. so this is my first blog and I just thought I'd start off talking about the Theory of Knowledge class in high school. All IB Seniors in my high school were required to take this course and we pretty much just sat around and discussed some very controversial issues in today's society. It was without a doubt my favorite class and we discussed Plan B, the death penalty, gay marriage, liberalism, the war on iraq, etc. I hope to touch a little bit on each of these topics as my blogs go on, but for now I just thought I would say... I think every senior in high school schould be required to take a course like this. It really made a lot of students more aware of some problems in todays society, it made a lot of students more open-minded, and it certainly stirred up a lot of emotion. Without this class I think it would be scary to see where some of these kids would be.. we were discussing some major political issues such as abortion and gay marriage and some kids are clueless as to what is going on. These are all kids who can vote too! We need to do a better job presenting the problems in society to students, and giving them the oppurtunity to discuss it and maybe even learn a different prospective in a classroom setting. If we don't educate the potential voters out there our future is doomed.

I have to agree. My high school was very liberal, including myself, but my senior year I had a very conservative English teacher. He would argue one side and everyone else would argue against him. Everyone feared for their grade. Nonetheless we all had our beliefs and held strongly to them.
I agree that a 'current events' kind of class should totally be mandatory. But I disagree that it should be taught by a liberal. I had a professor last semester who was the scariest liberal I'd ever seen. No one dared to dispute her, or she'd actually start to insult students. She had good points, but who wants to listen to someone that biased? I think that a the teacher appointed to such a class should have to be a moderate.
