I'm so sick of everyone judging people by what music they listen to. I think that enjoying the same music as someone else is a great way to bond or even strike up a friendship, but at the same time I think that we have all become to critical of what other people are listening to and have become too concerned with what is cool to listen to, which causes us to forget what music is really about.
My favorite kind of music is rock. I like to listen to Led Zeppelin, AC-DC, etc. But this shouldn't mean that I should get looked down on if I want to listen to Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" every once in a while. I shouldn't have to be ashamed of listening to something that isn't "cool" to other people. Just the other day I was in Hot Topic with a friend of mine buying a Guns n Roses t-shirt and the subject of hip-hop came up. I told her that I was a closeted hip-hop fan and not to tell anyone. I shouldn't have to feel ashamed that I like that stuff. Another thing that bothers me is that people think that if you listen to classical music you must be some kind of stuffy nerd. I've played the viola now for almost 10 years. I shouldn't have to feel ashamed that Beethoven and Shostakovich are my favorite musical artists.
There are so many stupid ways in which people are intolerant of each other. Why add music to the list of ways to be intolerant?
Seriously people stop being ashamed of what you listen to and stop making fun of other people for what they listen to! Unless it's country. Ew.
haha just kidding!
Also, just curious, since I was listening to him while I wrote this...any Victor Wooten fans out there?

I like all kinds of music-- hip-hop, pop, rap, rock, alternative, punk, and other. There shouldn't be anything wrong with listening to new hip-hop one day, and classic rock the next.
People just make assumtions about you according to what kind of music you listen to, which to me makes absolutely no sense.
I think people should be able to enjoy any music that they want without anyone bothering them about it.
Also, I like Victor Wooten and have some of his music? What's your favorite song? Mine is What Did He Say?
haha. cool. i like all the songs on the What Did He Say album. It's actually the only one that I have. I like the Lonliest Monk. I think the strings is really cool. The whole song sets this cool atmosphere and it has interesting lyrics. I also like the emphasis on the k at the end of monk. I also really like the other songs that don't really have any singing at all and are more just about the bass.
Ha! "Unless it's country". Funny stuff right there.
Honestly, when anyone asks me what music I like, I don't know how to answer. I usually default and say "Rock" (which could be alternative, classic, Heavy-whatever, etc). Really, I like all kinds. I like Alt Rock and some classic rock and some pop . I even love listening to soundtrack music, a guilty pleasure I don't mention much. I enjoy classical music (orchestral stuff) as well, but so far I can only get this type of music through soundtrack music.

Whoo! Soundtrack music geeks, unite!
Just curious, what songs do you like? I personally like "The Battle" from Narnia, "Shooting Star" from Stardust, "Battle for Varden" from Eragon, and the "Requiem for a tower" movements to name a few.

I have some random songs from like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, plus Harry Potter, naturally. The suites from Enchanted and Prince of Egypt are pretty good. I'll pretty much listen to whatever I can get my hands on

I'm going to go look those up now!
I don't know how you feel about the Harry Potter music, but I found the music from the latest movie (Order of the Phoenix) to be a little disappointing. I haven't downloading the original theme or anything. I'm thinking the best soundtrack music woudl come from either of the first two movies, do you agree?
I was actually thinking of doing a blog on soundtrack music. Good idea or not?

I agree, though Hedwig's Theme has gotten on my nerves. Which is why it rarely comes up in my playlist. That doesn't mean there's not good stuff in at least the third and fourth movie, though. Having only seen the 5th movie a handful of times, and not listened to the soundtrack, I'm not sure how I feel about all that.
I was certainly sad to see John Williams replaced, though.
Sounds like it'd be an interesting blog. Just relate it to progress somehow

You guys should check out Lord of the RIngs music. Its pretty frickin' sweet, And I didn't know John Williams was replaced, How could they? that man is a genius.
I agree. John Williams is one of the greats of movie soundtracks.
and don't worry mvenus, I can relate practically anything to progress! As for the HP music... I previewed the popular songs from the 5th movie on iTunes and I didn't see anything special in it. Nothing I'd want to listen to without the movie accompanying it. The original stuff was great, but now that they've been around so long I'm still unsure whether I should buy the music at all. I still like Fawke's and Hedwig's Themes though...

If you could only see my mp3 player! I've got Christina Aguilera next to Claude Delangle (an awesome classical saxophonist), Fatboy Slim next to Foo Fighters and Fleetwood Mac, and Timbaland next to Tchaikovsky just to name a few. As a musician myself, I'm sometimes a bit of a music snob, but more or less because I tend to discriminate against bad music (sorry Fergie). But just because I'm a classical musician doesn't mean I can't sing along to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" once in a while!
I know what you mean! I love almost all genres of music, i won't say everything, (because people say that too much). I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan myself, but I also like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, anything 80's (literally), alternative, hip-hop, reggae, pop, and classical. I have played the violin now for 6 years, and the piano for 4. I admire Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin the most. I will give Victor Wooten a look up as well as Shostakovich. : )
For the most part, I like sharing my musical tastes with people and I'm totally cool when they call me a dork because I know every word to the Tears for Fears song Shout!. They know they love that song too, they're just insecure. haha. But seriously liking Metallica, (Sanatorium!) does not mean you can't love the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack. Awesome by the way : ) People need to learn to embrace each others differences in taste not mock them.
I'm so happy that you're going to look up shostakovich and Victor Wooten. Shostakovich is a classical composer whose music is so intense and so much fun to play. Wooten is a jazz bassist.
This is a youtube video of an awesome quartet playing a song by Shostakovich.

Pay attention for the awesome viola solo. It's so cool. My chamber group at school is playing this piece at our next concert and I'm the only one in the group playing the solo in the octave that it was written.
wow I watched your link and I was really impressed. The staccatos were impeccable, and the timing had to be perfect! I really loved the piece but I would definitely need to play it down an octave! Its really sweet that you can play it as written because the solo viola had to reach some pretty tough notes quickly.
I also saw Victor Wooten, how could anyone truly hate his music!? He is probably the only person alive that can make a long bass solo interesting and fun to watch. Not to mention his fingers seemed to move like lightning.
To be honest, I can't really play it as written just yet. I've been practicing along with a slower recording and it helps a lot. I'm sure with time I'll get it. Our concert is in June so I still have a while.
I love Victor Wooten. I started playing bass guitar 5 years ago, though I can still barely play (I've been so focused on viola). He was in the first issue of Bass Player that I ever read. His talent is amazing.
Very cool. These people had some serious energy, and you'll have to have that same energy!
I don't know much about strings...I just started violin lessons last semester. I've played clarinet for seven years though, and guitar for four years, so I do have some musical knowledge.
Good luck with your solo!

I've always wanted to try the clarinet. I'm not quite sure but I believe I heard somewhere that the viola and clarinet have a similar range. Good luck with the violin! Stringed instruments are a lot of fun once you get going.
Thanks!
To give you an idea of a clarinets range: We can go from the E below the staff (using the treble clef of course) to notes about the staff that sound more like subsonic frequencies than actual notes. Okay, that last part I might have embellished a bit... Probably the highest note I personally can attain is a high D above the staff.

I hate Victor Wooten, but I totally respect your right to like him. I totally understand you. And I actually think Hillary Duff's music is pretty good. When people ask me what I like I usually say Celtic and ska. And people look at me strangely just for that, especially for liking Celtic music. But right now I'm listening to the soundtrack for CAMP. Genres of music are too varied to completely write one off.

I love that you hate Victor Wooten and think Hilary Duff's music is good! That's exactly what I wanted. People telling the truth about what music they like and not being ashamed of it.
I think it's so cool that you like such different types of music from other people. Ska is so awesome. I love that kind of sound.
I actually always fell guilty about not liking Wooten because I'm a bass player, and everybody just assumes that I'd be wowed by his skill, but he just doesn't do it for me. Hillary Duff does have some good song writers. My guilty pleasure is Naked Brothers Band, those kids are effing talented, and adorable.

I'm an indie rock fan and I think my love of Kelly Clarkson and musicals saved me from being a music snob.
