Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly known as the School of the Americas, is a combat training program for Latin American soldiers in Fort Benning, Georgia. Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics.
Many of these "soldiers" trained in the United States return to their home countries only to carry out devastating atrocities. Targets of these soldiers are generally anybody involved in a helping profession. Educators, activists striving for rights for those in poverty, religious workers, union organizers and student leaders are the individuals most commonly abused, raped, assassinated, massacred or mutilated by the SOA graduates.
Many claim the mission of the SOA is to train soldiers to protect the interests of multinational corporations and maintain the economic status quo for the few rich and powerful in the US and their cohorts in Latin America. This would explain why union organizors and labor leaders are commonly attacked.
In 2005, there was a brutal massacre in Colombia of many members of a peace community, including one well-known activist priest of the country.

Occurrences like this are too widespread and the United States citizens are paying for our government to operate this facility, only for the graduates to return to their countries to create mass damage.
An organization called the School of Americas Watch (SOAW) was established as a means of protesting the facility and attempting to get it shut down.
