Why isn't there a white heritage month?

Tagged:  •    •

Or week?  Or even a day for that matter?  Call me crazy, but despite my pale complextion I do have a heritage and a history to be proud of, and I feel kinda bad to have to celebrate it alone.  If we're all for equal rights, why can't every race have a holiday to celebrate its achievements?

This is actually a bit misleading of my true beliefs however.  In reality, I don't want any race to be celebrated over any other, and the easiest way to do that is to not celebrate race at all.  Oh, we should certainly all be proud of ourselves, for all of the traits and characteristics that make us who we are, but race is such a divisive and petty thing to use to differentiate ourselves.  We didn't choose our race, we were born with it.  It's like having an 'Impoverished Backgrounds' month, or a 'Born with a Silver Spoon in our Mouth' month (note: I'm not comparing any race with either of those financial analogies).  Being proud of one's heritage is one thing, but I don't see the need to celebrate race.

I understand the context in which Black History Month was started, and in those days, it was needed.  Black Americans needed an opprutunity to stand up and show that they were proud of who they were, to force the issue of racism into the light.  Today though, I believe such concepts as race would be better forgotten.  What is their point in a society in which equality is guaranteed to any race anyway?  Does it matter anymore if we're black, white, red, or purple if decisions are no longer meant to be made on that factor?  I think it's more racist to assume blacks need special treatment than to put them up against everyone else when it comes to scholarships and college acceptance, and its just as racist to assume all whites are rich and highly intelligent because we're not.

I just felt like rambling after I read someone else's blog on here.  Yes, I know its not Black History Month, oh well, I'm a little late to be saying this.  Anywho, hope I gave everyone something to think about.  Later!

"Black Americans needed an opportunity to stand up and show that they were proud of who they were, to force the issue of racism into the light."

Actually it was because very rarely were people who were not white were mentioned in history books, a lot of things were change or left out on purpose.

And to answer you question of why there isn't a white history month, that's because every month is, I mean think about it and the history classes you took in middle and high school. But I will go into that another time.

All of that is the government's way of trying to make amends for all the fucked up things it did in the past. There should really be a celebration for everyone who isn't a straight white male middle to upper class protestant, cause they are the only people who have never had a struggle in this country, and they still run this nation.

Even Protestants are discriminated against:

And men:

In some ways, people even discriminate against the upper class by somehow believing everyone who is "privileged" did not work to get there.

I just quickly Googled the links above.. but my point is: discrimination exists against everyone everywhere. Not to mention that there are women and minorities in the upper echelons of our government now, and there are more and more every day.

If you want to make a difference, then vote!

I agree with you about people hating the privileged, but that group of people has never faced the same discrimination from the American government.

I really don't know why people pay attention to the pope, all my catholic friends hate him.
Also, if people didn't care so much about football, other men's sports could get funding as well as women's sports. But I do think it's wrong that male nurses are discriminated against, although I don't think I would want a male nurse. People still have the notion of women as caring and men as brutes.

as for your last statement, i was actually talking to my mom yesterday about starting a voting campaign to get minorities and young people to vote, cause not enough of us do.

I am a white middle class male protestant! We have feelings too! Actually, we've got it worse than everyone else right now becaues everybody hates on the white middle class male protestants! lol ;)
I know that, about the govt. trying to make up for things, but still, how often do you take it seriously when someone says, "well, I should get special college advantages because black people used to be slaves?" You could argue them needing to make up for just plain racism from the last 50 years or so, but that's still flawed since its all relative. How far back is too long ago?

Don't you mean 40 years ago? Everything that happens in the past still affects us today, so I do kind of take it seriously when someone says that. I just wish there was a better way to make amends. if people could remove prejudice from their hearts, there would be no need for any of these laws. People still have discriminatory practices today.

and...
everybody might hate you but your government does not and never has, at least not in the U.S.

I don't think we necessarily need a "White heritage month", but a Heritage Celebration wouldn't be such a bad idea. A time period where everyone celebrates the traditions, past victories, and defeats that each heritage has gone through. For example: Have a seven week celebration, and each week a different continent is celebrated. That would be cool.

That would be kinda cool. But what 7 week period to do it? o.0

Great idea, that would be a lot of fun :)

It's because white people celebrate it every chance they get. They just do not realize it. This is like saying how come straight people do not have their pride parade or a national day of their own. We celebrate it on weddings and birthdays. So, white people have them too. Maybe you have to be in an organization or something...if you do find out, let me know. I would like to join!

I don't have a problem with others having pride in their race, I just have a problem with racism, prejudices and discrimination

Every watch the show "Kid Nation"? I never knew just how white culture impacted on everyday lives until I heard this Indian kid say that the best leaders in world history are George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt and Mahatma Ghandi. That's the power of cultural indoctrination at work. Other than Ghandi, these people wouldn't even make my list of the top 100.
