Automakers don't want cars to be more gas efficient

As illustrated by many hybrid cars being put on the market in certain states in America, the people of America have the technology to make cars that put out less toxins from gasoline, require less gasoline for larger mileage, and are overall better for the environment.

Disclaimer! I am not for the "going green" fad that's become popular by celebrities. I like to think of it as common sense. Maybe black stinky smoke from factories and cars aren't good for people or for the environment...

Automakers aren't to the point where they can make a car run on water, but we are at a point where consumers should be able to choose from cars that reduce our dependency on foreign oil. And I am all for that, considering not just the price of gasoline lately, but the price of our war with Iraq right now. And I'm not talking about money.

California is a premier American leader of adopting new policies that would minimize pollutants. Many other states have adopted their laws, but things in Vermont got ugly. Automakers claimed that it would put a hardship on their businesses to implement California's laws that the Environmental Protection Agency supports.

I like to think of the EPA as a nice, gentle watchdog that tells people "Whoa! Do you realize that by dumping that nuclear waste in that river you can kill thousands of fish? And then people?" (Anyone correct me if I'm wrong)

An example: So, aside from automakers making 400 billion dollars they would make 399 billion dollars. My figures may be too low.

The federal judge that overruled the claims of the automanufacturers was Judge William K Sessions III. He also said that the defense of the automakers didn't prove that by limiting gas emissions it would endanger job loss, safety, stop people from having a broad choice of cars or, here's the big one, cause car sales to plummet.

I am sure there are other reasons for the automakers' fight against regulating their cars for pollution safety, but I'm sure they aren't good.
