I’ll admit that I’m biased. In school, at home, watching TV, or even on this site. I am biased here because I will often avoid introductory blogs because I feel they will say nothing of substance and be another pity bargainer or boring “Hi I’m 5’4”, blonde, and fictional”. This blog is all about the consequences of making assumptions or having bias.
I had an English teacher in tenth grade who asked the class one day, “Do you know what assume means?” After the confused stares of his students, he walked up to the board and wrote ASSUME in big blocky letters. He said, “When you ASSUME, you make an--” he underlined the first three letters, “ASS out of “ underlines U and ME, “--you and me”. In high school, hearing a teacher say “ass” feels like a rare treat indeed. Either that or the teacher has gone mad.
I keep thinking about this quote from this teacher, and if there’s one thing I remember about 10th grade English it is that quote. I’ve found how true it is, and continue to find instances where it belongs.
A few minutes ago, I was perusing the ‘Recent Blog Posts’ column in search of an interesting blog. I’d read some that looked interesting, and then I was looking for another. I clicked on “I Begin”, dreading what was to come.
So here I am, admitting that I am biased. I often avoid intro blogs. Many times, there is no subject at all. It is just the person introducing him/herself and telling why he/she needs the scholarship. After 300 of these, it starts getting old. When I started on Prog U, I didn’t even introduce myself or do a intro blog. I jumped right into a research paper on video gaming’s effect on children.
Knowing what is to inevitably come, I will often avoid blogs saying “first post” or “about me” or whatever. However, since this post is about wrongful bias and assumptions, I should now get to the point.
“I Begin” and several other introductory blogs that I’ve read in the past few days have been good blogs! People are being more creative and original than I gave them credit for.
So I guess this is me saying I’ve made an ASS out of U and ME….

*sniff* wish I had a promoted intro blog.
But now you are an awesome blogger! Not everybody is good at everything they do the first time - and this wasn't my first blog. : )
Now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I shall continue to blog!
