A cashier's plea

I am a cashier at a Super Wal-mart right now but have worked in a few different cashiering positions over the years. I've seen the same thing over and over again and it is really quite scary. I came up with a few little NOTES to those of you who ever walk into a store, buy things from others, or cash out with a cashier. Most can be applied to any position in which a person is purchasing a service or item (food in a resturant or food in a grocery store respectively).

1) Offering good customer service does not mean becoming a slave. Just becasue we asked "What can I help you with today?" doesn't mean you get to make us do any outrageous thing that comes into your head.

2) I am a cashier not a baby-sitter. I love kids but my job does not include watching your choldren for you. Keep your child with you and keep your eyes on his/her actions. This includes preventing said child from destroying the store.

3) I am a person. I true blue human being. This means, stop talking about me as if I wasn't really standing 2ft from you.

4) Hang up the cell phone! When I need to ask you a question you may wnt to answer or you won't get things the way you so desperatly wanted them. If you are too busy talking to hear me tell you the total or to ask you if you would like me to wrap something separate than the results are your own fault, whether it be a longer wait to complete the transaction or things not being bagged right.

5) I am not 5 and I am not an idiot. I am working as a cashier because it was a job that would fit into my schedule. It was close to home and it was available. I'm not here because I am stupid. In fact, alot of times I have a higher IQ than the customers looking down on me.

6) "Make her do it. She has to, its her job" is not an excuse to hand me some of the nastiest tasks that you should have taken care of yourself. Laziness on your part does not constitute extra work on my part. Lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergencey on mine.

7) "20 items or less" means that yuo shouldn't use that lane if you have more than 20 items. I know its confusing but try to understand. Coming through with 105 items and then getting mad because the register is too small to allow you to just leave you bags hanging around until you feel like putting them back into your cart is just plain rediculous.

8) If you have bags that are full and there is still alot more to finish ringing up, try grabbing a few of those bags. Put them in your cart and get them out of the way.

9) If your child makes a mess (spills, pukes, urinates, etc) please let someone know. Don't just walk away. things happen and we understand this but its rude to just act like we are here to clean up after you like servants. We'll clean it either way but sometimes its nice to have an idea of what it is that we're about to clean up.

10) Be nice! You aren't the only person that has had a bad day. We may be the last people you see before you leave but really we have no control over anyone else causing you problems in the store so please tell us nicely. We can get a manager or let them know later but yelling at us won't help matters.

Try it... see what a difference a little common curtesy may make. The cashier that you used to think was jsut plain grumpy may smile back if you give her a reason to.
