Teens & Suicide

A study completed in 2001 showed that suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. For females suicide was the 19th leading cause of death, and for males it was the 8th leading cause if death; these deaths totaled 30,622. 73% of deaths due toe suicide are committed by white males, and a whopping 80% of females that commit suicide are white. Deaths due to suicide were twice as many as deaths due to HIV/AIDS. When the researchers looked at the weapon most used by the person committing suicide, a firearm was used more than 55% of the time.
The teen suicide rate is even more devastating. Suicide is the third leading cause of deaths in teenagers or young adults. The age range for this statistic is 15-24.
The gender ratio for college aged young adults is 7:1 (males:females). The number of deaths a year in this age category is 2,360.
