He said: "Graduations are boring, not really my thing" She said: "We are going and we'll be bored together!!!"

So, my brother is graduating from college May 10th. Being that he is my brother and I love him, I am going to go no matter that graduation ceremonies are among the most boring time you can spend in a place usually designed to host crowd-pleasing events. So, naturally I invited my boyfriend to come with me. Or, I think it is natural to do so.

The graduation has been mentioned several times in front of him over the past few months, including the date. And last night I more "formally" asked him by saying "so...what are you doing May 10th?" -

and he answered, “probably sitting on my couch…blah blah blah”

and I said, “how would you like to come to my brother's graduation with me?”

And he said, "I'd rather not, I was hoping you weren't going to ask me to go. graduations are boring, not really my thing"

We were at his neighbor's house for birthday cake so I just said that we should probably talk about it later (I wouldn't have asked him there if I thought he was going to say no...).

SO – ProgressiveU – are we so progressive that we no longer attend graduation ceremonies because they are boring or “not really my thing”??? My inclination is no. We come together in relationships to support each other. I support my family and if you are in a relationship with me, you support me by accompanying me while I support my family.

Thoughts?

At my graduation, our principal made a huge speech before it started stating that it wasn't a celebration, it was a ceremony. Applause and whistles and yelling were not appropriate at all, until everyone had crossed the stage. The audience was supposed to sit quietly and watch.

I didn't even want to be there.

Fortunately, the audience hated the principal as much as we did, and no one listened. But, I would have felt pretty bad for anyone coming to support me if they had attended and had to sit through that whole thing in silence.

I think that graduations are a good thing to go to, because it's something that doesn't happen that often in your life, and it shows your accomplishments. Yes, sitting through all the names is a pain, but when it's your name being called or the person's you are supporting, it makes all the time worthwhile because you are recognizing their accomplishments and showing your support.

UPDATE: without any further discussion, he informed me that he is coming and we can be bored together! Yea! Just thought I'd let you know...
