What’s so offensive about a high school senior carrying a banner with the message: "Bong Hits For Jesus?" Is our society really so conservative that we can’t see the humor behind the message?
In a huge victory for free speech advocates, a federal district court in San Francisco ruled recently that 18-year old Joseph Fredrick, who was a high school senior when he unfurled his banner during a televised torch relay at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Juneau Alaska, should not have been suspended from school for displaying the colorful banner.
I think the court ruled wisely. Fredrick wasn’t even on campus at the time he unfurled his banner. I think the school had no business suspending him for 10 days for what was essentially a harmless display of lovely satire.
But the fight isn’t over yet. The school board wants the US Supreme Court to hear the case. Interestingly, Kenneth Starr, the former Whitewater special prosecutor, will represent the school board in appealing the court’s ruling. He has agreed to take the case for free.

Hey he wasn't in school. It isn't fair.I hope he wins
