Mormonism is one of those religions that not very many people really understand. More so, it’s a religion that people don’t like to take the time to actually learn about. They make their assumptions that Mormons: don’t drink, swear, or do drugs, they tend to have large families, have “special” underwear, wrote their own bible, and do “secret” rituals in their temples. These, so I have heard, are all things that other religions have preached from the pulpits of their own churches. What a lot of people don’t understand is that Mormons are regular people too, they just have different morals.
Let me explain some of these regularly taught inaccuracies.
Mormons don’t drink, swear or do drugs because they try to avoid any substance that may be harmful to the body or could be considered addictive. They believe in what is called Free Agency, which is the ability to make your own choice. They believe that being addicted to a substance, say alcohol, takes away their Free Agency. If they become addicted to alcohol their body craves it and quiting becomes extremely difficult. People may argue that casual drinking is okay, because a little bit can’t do any harm, which I think is true. But why risk getting caught up in something that could potentially ruin your life/liver in the end. Swearing on the other hand is a big “no-no” because is corrupts the mind. Instead of being able to use descriptive words such as “that hurt really bad” their vocabulary shrinks to “that fucking hurt” and then everything turns into “eff” this and “shit” that. Swearing is also highly addictive; if you don’t believe me, try not to swear for a whole day, it’s hard, I know from personal experience.
Not all Mormon families reach the double digits, in fact most have approximately four to seven children. Other families only have one or two. It really depends on family. Mormons believe that as a family their gift to the world is to give life to souls that have not yet had the ability to be born. It’s a difficult idea to grasp for anyone that is looking into the Mormon religion. Let’s just put it this way for all you horny peoples out there, Mormons have lots and lots of sex. They are not totally for or against birth control. Plus who doesn’t want their own genetic copies running around?
Mormons DO NOT have special underwear, in fact some of my favorite underwear is Hans or Fruit of the Loom, very comfy. The special underwear people refer to is in fact, Temple Garments, they go over underwear but under the clothes. They are used as reminders of their commitment to God. They also emphasize the modesty line, which is: shirts that are not too tight, sleeves that go past the shoulders, pants that are not too tight, and skirts or shorts that are not too short. Only adults wear Temple Garments because they have had a chance to go through the temple which is where you get them.
The Book of Mormon is NOT a bible, it is simply “another testament of Christ,” and yes Mormons believe in Christ. They still use the Bible, but add onto it the Book of Mormon. However, they do not worship Mormon; he is simply the guy that translated the book, before Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon is an account of Christ’s visit to the America’s after his resurrection, just like he did in Jerusalem. Many people clam, “Bible, Bible, we already have a Bible.” But do you really think God just stopped talking to people? Mormons believe that there is modern revelation all around us, in fact journal writing, another Mormon custom, is a form of personal scripture.
The Temple is hard to explain, and I don’t plan on swaying your view on what exactly goes on in the Temples. Temples are sacred places Mormons go to worship God. What goes on in the Temple is very sacred as well, in fact unless you are an adult you can’t really do very much in the Temple. You must be at least 14 years old, have a Temple Recommend, and be a Mormon to attend the Temple. Marriages and Baptisms for the dead are performed in the Temple. There are other Temple ordinances but they are too sacred to talk about, mainly for the reason that some people will not understand and they will make a mockery of the Church. If you really want to know what goes on in the Temple, become a Mormon.
There is one more thing that I would like to address before closing this blog. As you probably have noticed I am Mormon, I love my religion, and it hurts when my non-Mormon friends tell me that their preacher was talking smack about Mormons from the pulpit. I would like to say that I have been Mormon for 19 years, I have attending dozens of different Mormon Wards, and never once have I heard any of our leaders preach that Catholics, Christians, Baptists, etc. are crazy or bad people because of what they believe. They have never said that what the other religions teach is wrong. In fact I never actually knew very much about other religions until coming to college. So, if you have any questions about Mormonism, please ask a Mormon friend, you probably have one, and not your preacher.

I like this idea of "Free Agency". It is a good principle to live by, and it seems to reflect my own views on drugs or alcoholism.
Cursing being addictive? I believe it. I see people who curse like crazy who can't even restrain this language when they're calm and composed.
Good entry. You've represented this religion well, in my opinion.
im one of those people who never really tried to understand the Mormanism, not because im against it or think it is bad...i've just never had the chance to see it from anothers eyes. Thanks for the post it was informational. : )
Modern Mormonism is okay, but early Mormonism and fundamentalist Mormonism have a LOT of problems. x.x
Thanks for the post, it was insightful. I've got a few mormon friends, and I really admire their morals and standards.
