Akon: Pop Culture Run Amok!

Akon, Grammy nominated Hip-Hop and R&B artist stepped way over the line of decency recently while simulating rough sex with a 14 year old girl onstage during a concert in Trinidad last month. Some, after viewing the video describe the act as “simulated sexual assault” with the 14 year-old’s head being bruised from Akon repeatedly slamming her against the stage. Questions are being raised as too whether some sort of charges should be filed.

You can view the video here: http://www.hollywoodgrind.com/?p=5355 (scroll down the page for the video). The video shows Akon dry-humping the girl, dragging her around the stage and doing something that resembles oral sex.

This is yet another case showing that degrading women, showing them as sexual possessions and discarding them as pure objects is something deemed acceptable by hip-hop culture. You can see in the video that fans seemed to enjoy this act, slapping their hands on the edge of the stage as the frenzy continued. Akon’s management representatives were ”shocked by the news” that Verizon Wireless was pulling out of a $2 million sponsorship of an upcoming Gwen Stefani tour which has Akon as an opening act. Verizon also dropped all Akon ring-tones and video clips just days after the incident.

The fact that this behavior is viewed as acceptable by some is extremely disturbing. Decades of work and struggle by women all over the world seem to be negated by an over indulgent, classless group of thugs. How anyone can see this as harmless entertainment is beyond me, think of the self esteem of these women and what they must go through for acceptance in their “community”. It kind of makes the Imus flap look like a bake sale.

I believe that stories of this nature will continue as long as this sub culture continues to degrade women and promote obviously destructive behavior while the main stream public moves in the opposite direction. I hope that more corporations and the public follow Verizon’s lead and distance themselves from Akon and his concerts, it’s time that a real message was sent.

It amazes me that people watch and listen to this shit and find nothing wrong with it...it's disgusting. I applaud Verizon for dropping out. Hopefully more sponsers will follow.

And the african american community was appauled by the Don Imus, nappy headed ho's comment. I doubt anything will happen to Akon.

Bunch of hypocrites.

Nice post.

she doesn't exactly look to be 14, just like a lot of other females don't.

she didn't seem to have any type of problem with what happened, while it was happening.

people do wacko crap like that all over the world, but since he's mr. america now, I guess he can't be his true self anymore. it's funny how none one else has been caught doing things of that origin.

I agree. She shouldn't have been at that concert in the first place. And it's only a problem because she got caught by her preacher father. She was probably rebelling against her dad like most kids of religious people do.

I sometimes wonder how exactly more stupid can we get until I hear something like this. Even if the girl wasn't underage, it's still disgusting that this moron was stupid enough to do it on stage. Whatever happened to public decency?!

I'm glad to see that Verizon dropped their sponsorship and everything else dealing with Akon. It shows that there is some people with common sense in the world.

I can see that people are and should be livid about the behavior of Akon. I mean, who acts like that without being on some sort of hard drug?! I hate to say this, but the girl didn't seem to have a particular issue with being held hostage by the celebrity. As disgusting as his behavior was, we should also examine how we are allowing our youth to be raised. Her mother or father or guardian of sorts should have taught her not to behavior in such a fashion. Or are we just missing something as a society?

I disagree with all you guys saying it is all akon's fault. I am in no way a akon fan, but his new song, sorry, blame it on me, is awesome! It was not only his fault, how could he have known in a 21 OR OVER club, she was UNDERAGE!?!?! She doesn't seem to be dreading this 'dance' either, she could have done something to get out of the big situation, and I am a huge feminst so when I side of something like this, it is a big deal.
