Part Of Why The Housing Market Is Down
I watch a lot of the shows on HGTV, Discovery, and other channels that have to do with building, redesigning, and/or buying homes. I love architecture, I love design, and a big part of the reason that I watch these shows is to get ideas for my future home. (I plan on designing and building it myself.) However, within watching these shows, I have noticed one major problem in houses that donāt sell, or houses that have a hard time selling.
Personal taste.
Too many people look at the furniture and things as their own. I saw one episode of āsell that houseā where the house was an older house, probably from the 60ās or so. When people walked through the house they kept commenting on the pictures hanging on the wall, or they commented on the bed sheets in the master bedroom. āIt looks like a cheap 70ās motel room!ā I think only 1 of the 3 groups of people that walked through didnāt comment on the bed.
But wait a minute, since when do you get a bed when buying a house? I am aware, that some people do sell their house all furniture included, but it doesnāt happen that often.
Perhaps part of the reason people arenāt buying houses is because they arenāt looking at the house. They are looking at the person in the house before them. Not the house itself.
I know that this isnāt the actual reason people arenāt buying older homes is because they keep building new houses, in subdivisions (UGH. I HATE THEM). They build subdivisions out in the country, and then they claim that you are living in the country. It is one of the worst things ever. This just started a new blog. Be expecting another one soon.

With older homes it gets very expensive to keep them up. After a while the pipes need to be replaced, the siding, the electrical needs to be up-to-date - maybe the reason people go with the pre-fab homes is because all of this stuff is already done? This does seem to be a lazy generation, not many people want to work on an older home when they can go buy a newer, lower maintenance home.
I own an older home and love it. It's got little quirks that newer houses could never have. I do have to work hard to keep it up, though. I already gutted most of it and had an electrician come out to upgrade all of the electrical, but I still have to redo all the plumbing. It's definitely not cheap to own an older home, but I think it's worth it! I only wish more people thought the same way.
