Scholarship Scams

Tagged:  •

OK, so there are dozens of websites out there who wanna help you find scholarships for college. Many of them warn about scholarship scams and how they can be avoided. So when you get to the results page, you begin to suspect everything that offers you more than $1000 of being a potential scholarsip scam. How secure is searching for scholarships on the Internet? How common are these scams? I am a very confused scholarship seeker. Any information on this topic will be greatly appreciated.

Just be wary of anything that asks for money, your Social Security Number or anything having to with bank accounts. Really, it's more about common sense.

It is quite confusing. There are so many different sites out there and lotteries. It cant hurt to try soemthing as long as you don't give out any information that is too personal such as SSN.

A lot of scholarship applications that require fees are scams. It's not true for all of them, though.

yea, there are alot of internet scholarship scams out there. I think the SSN is a dead give away

I think it's just a matter of using common sense to figure out if it's a scam or not. If you are going to WinAReallyBigScholarship.com and they ask for SSN & tax forms, chances are that it's a scam. If you go to HansoFoundation.org and they ask for basic email/name/address information, chances are it's not a scam. (Though that's not to say that there aren't many legit scholarships that ask for SSN & tax information). Chances are though that if it feels too good to be true, looks like a scam & smells likes a scam, it's a scam.

I JUST FINISHED LOOKING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS ON THE INTERNET AND I THINKS ITS A BUNCH OF CRAP! I FILL OUT ALL THE INFORMATION AND THEN THEY GIVE ME SOME BOGUS SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS AND FEES!!

Always check out the organization's website. If all it says is something about a scholarship and it doesn't have information about the rest of the organization or contact information, it's more likely to be a scam.

I thin that there are scams out there to get gelable student trying to get closer to a scholarship to pay for college.
