Why Skirts Are Awesome

Yesterday I wore a skirt. Apparently this is quite a startling event - I got quite a few strange looks as I walked around on campus. I also noticed that virtually no other people were wearing skirts.

This quite saddens me. Why don't more people wear skirts? Girls AND guys should wear skirts. Particularly guys. There's absolutely no logical reason for a guy to wear pants. Allow me to be blunt - a guy has dangly bits between his legs. Crushing the dangly bits with pants is very unhealthy. As well as being more uncomfortable, making nether regions less hygenic, and raising the risk of infection, wearing tight clothing around the crotch (like pants) can reduce sperm count. So instead of having 40 million little swimmers in your semen, you might have like, a mere 20 million! O: Which does get serious when you start thinking about how many of those swimmers utterly fail in their single life mission.

The same things apply to girls (aside from the sperm count thing, except in unusual cases). Why aren't girls wearing skirts more? Didn't girls use to wear skirts all the time? Pants can be very cool (I do wear pants most of the time, despite my words), but what happened to skirts?

And seriously, what about male skirts? I believe it was the Persians who wore skirts and then laughed after they destroyed an army, saying, "What would you expect from men who wear PANTS?" There are many beautiful (handsome? fine? fashionable?) skirts designed for men. If you're male, start wearing one! Enjoy increased comfort and make it more socially acceptable so eventually all guys (and girls) feel comfortable wearing skirts.

Some links to see skirts (some for guys, some for both guys and girls):
http://www.macabiskirt.com
http://www.doandroidsdream.com/product_html/skirts/skirts_mw_1.htm (the first one is a particular favorite of mine on men. A topless, fit man wearing one of those skirts is simply the pinnacle of male beauty. I don't know if straight girls would agree with me but they should)

There was a boy in my class last year who had a kilt. It was quite stylish in my opinion.

I personally like the long skirts on men, but kilts can be very fashionable!

I live in the hippiest of all states, I swear. I live in Vermont, and to be honest, I think most of my male friends...which, in hindsight, are nearly all of my friends..wear skirts in the summer! I remember moving back from Boston and being a little taken aback by this sudden "trans-gender" clothing revelation, but it made sense. My friend Tim even made it a point of trying to defend his skirt wearing, but I told him not to bother because I knew it made sense. I usually wear long skirts or dresses in the summer (i'm not particularly fond of the short ones...always afraid of my nether regions somehow getting perversely exposed) but it's true! They are healthier.

It's also proven that one of the reasons women get yeast infections is because they wear underwear that are too tightly fitted and pants, also too tightly fitted, for extended periods of time that increase your natural yeast count.

gross, i know, but that's why in the winter i resort to going commando.

also, i agree with you. men should wear skirts more often, though i have to admit, if my boyfriend wore a skirt it might be very awkward for me. only because he's so skinny and feminine already. this is not intended to be a gay-bashing at all, but he's already mistaken for a gay man without a skirt; with a skirt he'd get pressed that he is a gay man, even to the point of being convinced he is.

nevermind, i could convince him he was straight.
:D

Eh, so he might think he's bi, no harm done there. XD

As far as nether regions getting exposed with short skirts, just wear loose pants or shorts underneath. Then you still get style. :p

Although this website is particularly amusing. I think the guy that owns it would be fun to interview. (Enter the site and read some of his articles - don't be fooled by the crappy design.)

Maybe the weird looks came from the fact that it's currently winter? I'm not sure where you're from, but I am from Michigan and wearing a skirt during the winter is tough.

I wear skirts/dresses during the winter. Longer ones with tights. I find them to be comfortable and adorable.

Men in skirts would take some getting used to but if it's for their benefit then I'm all for it!

Michigan weather....one week it's in the 50's (warm for the winter) the next week it snows 8 inches. I just can't seem to give up my flats no matter the weather.

You are much braver than I... as soon as Thanksgiving comes I break out my black leather boots and I can't give them up until Spring. Even sneakers get soaked. Ugh... just thinking about cold, wet feet gives me the shivers.

What an entertaining blog! All I can say is that I feel most comfortable wearing a skirt or shorts. I really do love wearing skirts and agree with you that everyone should wear skirts more often!

This was an insightful blog! I never thought about skirts as much as you have, but I do agree with everything that you say in your blog. lol =)

x3ohsoosweet's picture

I agree! Men are always too worried about being "manly" and wouldn't be caught dead in a skirt. There's a kid at my school that will wear an Irish kilt to school every now and then(he does it to be funny), and we've actually had a conversation about how comfortable skirts are. He says he feels so "free." Skirts are definetly amazing in my book. :]

Kiota's picture

I've seen some incredibly manly men modeling skirts. See my reference about the Persians. Skirts are not feminine. Everyone used to wear skirts, for some weird reason some strange person decided it was better to wear pants.

I really enjoy wearing skirts. They seem to have an affect on me and make me feel prettier and happier. Everybody should be able to feel that!

Excellent post, you brought up several good points.

I've been looking for skirts, but they always seem so expensive for a length of cloth wrapped into a cylinder. I do like the style of those macabi skirts, but $76.95? That's awful expensive!

Buy a length of cloth in your preferred texture and color, cut it to the length you want, and tada! Skirt!

Also, Ebay is really awesome. So are sales. So are second-hand things.

Welcome to the world of women's clothes in general.

Underwear/bras? $30-$50 for ones that don't fall apart after a week (and think of just how little fabric those often have!).

I don't know where YOU go shopping for underclothes, but all my bras are going strong and only cost like $15.

I'm guessing you get yours at Wal-Mart? All the ones I get from there fall apart within a week or two (assuming I can find one I'm comfortable with since I hate underwires). JCPenny usually has good ones, but again, they're about $20-$30 depending on sales.

Walmart or Target... Target is closer to where I live, and Walmart is closer to where my mom lives.

Yeah, I have too big of a chest to go without underwires... there are only like 2 bras in my cup size without them, and they're not horribly comfortable or flattering. But I've gotten several really nice bras at walmart, and none of them have fallen apart as of yet, even after having been washed who knows how many times. Course, I air dry them, because otherwise the wires warp too much, so maybe that helps some...

There are few things about men that turn me on, but I absolutely LOVE a man in a kilt. I went to my first Celtic festival last year and almost died!

I dunno, some older men I've seen are still very fit, and their age lends them a weathered sort of handsomeness. I'm not into men at all really but I can see how a fit older guy, all weathered and wise with life experience, could be very appealing. XD

i agree. that's a good point. but then again, you usually bring up good points =0)

I'm required to wear pants at least 2 days a week. And during the winter, it's not particularly fun wearing a skirt, especially since I don't have too many nice shoes to go with them (because a skirt and sneakers just looks weird).

I'm not saying people should ALWAYS wear skirts, I actually wear pants more often.

As for shoes - long skirts can cover that! :D

I know... but my desire to wear a skirt usually corresponds with a day I'm required to wear pants. That killed me last year, because all the really nice days were days I had to wear pants.

And I have a thing against long skirts... they just feel stifling. Probably something left over from the days I wore long velvet skirts to concerts.

I know a five-year-old who would LOVE to wear skirts. But since he wears his brother's hand-me-downs, it'll have to catch on with the older boys before they trickle down to him! I'll work on it. Kilts for Christmas!

I know you try to be gender-neutral with your stuff, but turn the old jeans into skirts! :D

When done right, an old pair of jeans makes for a pretty good looking denim skirt.

Utility kilts and butchers apron skirts are a common thing among guys in goth culture. Some can carry it off, and others, well, they just don't...... There is an attitude that men have to wear when wearing a skirt. If they don't have the attitude they simply don't look that good in them.

mmmmm..that movie is a great example of some yummy, yummy men in kilts...personally, I think nothing is hottier then a good-looking man in a skirt or kilt; I guess I'm lucky enough to live in a city where gender-bending is the rule, not the exception...I see quite a few men walking around in skirts...some are trannies, but some are totally straight men who would just rather wear skirts. One especially cool guy I can think of rode his bicycle all the way from Georgia to live in Portland (imagine, 3,000 miles on a bike!,) and he wears long skirts and sometimes makeup almost every day. He looks really good in skirts...but then again, I think all people do!

I wore a skirt today with long over-the-knees wool socks on a long, cold bike ride today...I even got hit by a car in my skirt, but luckly, walked away with road-rash. I never wear underwear and sometimes while biking in my little skirts I'm sure I flash people Brittany-Spears style, but I don't really care. I like feeling a little breeze on my neitherregions...no yeasty-beasties for me!

Skirts forever!
Love ya,
Carrot

Great comment, I just want to point out that if a "tranny" is wearing a skirt, that individual is probably not male (unless you define "male" strictly by the ownership of "male genitalia").

Kiota's picture

Whyever not?

guess what? Not only do I love skirts, especially long ones, but I am required to wear them. I go to a moderately strict Christian College, and we are required to wear at least knee-length skirts every day (except fridays, when we can wear jeans if we also wear something with our school name on it.) haha =) yes, skirts are awesome!! great post.
oh p.s: to answer the question that will probably form in your mind; no, the boys are not allowed to wear skirts. At least, I don't think so. Let me check the rules.

hmm it doesn't say they aren't. it doesn't say they are. But I think Jesus wore something tunic-like, so if a boy tried to wear a long skirt at my school he could probably make a very logical, convincing argument for it. I could maybe help him lol =)
keep your insightful posts coming!!!
have a blessed day!

oh and my school is just outside Schroon Lake, New York. Aka freezing nowhere-land in the Adirondack mountains. for all you pussies, stop complaining about wearing skirts in the cold. lol =) I do it almost every day. its not that hard.

Do you have any chemical labs at your school? If so, what do you wear to protect your legs from spills?

And I live on the top of a bluff in colorado springs. When there's a nice breeze in the rest of the city, there's a gale here, and bare legs aren't a great thing to have when that happens.

At my school we just wore long skirts O.o thus no spills? Or pants under the skirt. Most girls didn't wear short skirts ("short" as in, not at least halfway down the calf) anyway. And it was in high school (the elementary/junior high school I went to didn't have a chem lab or anything like that), at that age kids can generally avoid spilling dangerous chemicals on their bare legs. I personally don't recall anyone receiving even a mild burn/injury or having a major chemical spill in class. *shrug*

A skirt doesn't necessarily mean bare legs. In elementary school and high school, nearly all my skirts were ankle-length. Right now I have three very long skirts and three short skirts... but I only wear the short ones with leggings or pants underneath.

mvenus929's picture
Managing Director of Progressive U

See, me hating ankle length skirts means I think of skirts as knee-length or mid-calf.

And when you have exploding glass, it doesn't particularly matter how careful you are. There are mishaps even in college chemistry classes, and most everyone is a legal adult. We're not allowed to wear shoes that bare any part of our feet (though they're most strict about the closed-toe part) for that exact reason. In micro lab, in addition to wearing all that, we are required to wear a labcoat (or an old shirt, but only like 3 people wear old shirts instead of labcoats).

The schools I went to also required skirts that had to cover the knee at least.

Personally though I doubt your school would allow guys to wear skirts. Even though Jesus likely wore full-length dresses at times, perhaps all the time... it's a different matter in the 21st century. They'd be accused of acting feminine or gay or upsetting other students, etc. Even if the school did let them, somehow (and I'd assume they'd only be allowed to wear "masculine" skirts, nothing cute or pretty or colorful or "feminine"), I doubt anyone would dare to, simply because in a Christian college, they would unfortunately likely be otracized and treated badly for being "feminine" or "gay". People just don't get that not only can very straight, very masculine men wear skirts, but in fact, pretty much all the religious leaders of the major religions in the world, plus a very good amount of great conquerers and warriors, wore skirts/tunics/dresses and thought pants were ridiculous.

Volunteer for the Progressive U Alumni Association

In my experience, the (Protestant) Church frowned upon women wearing pants because pants were supposedly "men's" clothes. I would assume they'd think the same for men in skirts (with skirts being "women's" clothes).

As far as the Catholic Church doing that, I don't know. I was only Catholic till about 8 years old, and our house wasn't very religious during that time.

-- quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

personally, i don't like guys wearing skirts. the scottish do it, but it's not for everyone. but in my drama class we had some of the guys wear kilts. it wasn't that bad, but some guys didn't have the legs for it.

I love to wear skirts that's practually all I wear in the summer I hate shorts so that's the alternative for me. The only bad part is I like to sit crossed legged and it's not a good idea to do in a skirt for apparent reasons. Now guys wearing skirts I'm not quite sure about that but hey it might be cool I will check out those links.
