Women's Mags Dealing with Societal Issues

I subscribe to almost every woman's magazine that is out there for my age group:Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Glamour, Elle, Vogue, Women's Health, Fitness, Self, Prevention, and a handful of others that are eluding my memory right now...and I have been increasingly impressed with their content.

I am reading October's Cosmopolitan and they have covered Abduction, and ways to keep yourself safe, and I realized that I take for granted the safety I feel. My eyes were opened to the things I don't do to protect myself, and my awareness was raised to the simplicity of safety.

Many of the magazines are covering breast cancer, and a few are stepping up on politics. It is refreshing to see the magazines really approach issues. I have been subscribed to many of them for years, and have recently noticed the content value to be spiking.

I also get National Geographic and Reader's Digest, Writer's Digest, Parenting, Parent's, Christianity Today, Psychiology Today, and I am missing a few more...I don't want people to think I am some snobby woman who reads smut all the time, but I enjoy these publications. I like to learn from different sources, the reason I am here and actively reading and writing...

I just wanted to commend these publications, and also you, the writer's and readers of this site...We are the future. Cheers to us!

How do you have time to read all those magazines??
I have noticed a heightened awareness of breast cancer recently in magazines and society everywhere.

they sit for months, but I am always reading a couple of books (8 right now) and my magazines and a few different blogs. This has become my favorite because of the caliber of people...Kudos.

I've been a subscriber to Vogue for a while now and I'm pretty impressed with how they write about ways to cut down your carbon imprint in shopping lol It may sound weird, but it's pretty cool. I also like how they aren't afraid to post negative editorials in their magazines. Half praise the magazine and the other half criticize it, I think it's pretty noble of them to put both in there.

Oh My God. I really admire you now. lol. I can't even get myself to buy one magazine. Maybe I should start buying them. What would you recommend? I really like psychology but I'm afraid it's going to be boring to read. As for women's publications, I feel that they're aiming for older audience and I can never find anything I can relate to. Some magazines that are aimed for girls my age are all about teen stars, boys, girls, their looks, their wealth, their good looking bodies, boys, boys, boys, boys, sex, and boys. So, ultimately I stopped looking through them. Perhaps I have to start reading more mature magazines.

until i started to read some by chance at my cousin's house who has the marie claire and ELLE and a few others you listed, she's has money or something so she subscribed to them BUT i used to think they were trash
i read some of her Marie Cliare's and usually they have a lot of social awareness aritcles about issues all over the world and they feature important role models for us to look upto- women who have done some really amazing things in their life. and basically, i learned that there wil always be a few that SUCK and there are others that are really good
I personally only have subscription to Newsweek and Reader's Digest and i read the NYtimes everyday (thanks to the free papers at my college) and I am thinking of getting the Economist subscription..
anyways, nice blog.

Doesn't subscribing to all those magazines get expensive?

If I pay $20 for two years on some and $12 a year on others...I end up paying at different times and remind myself that from the newstand I would get three magazines for the price of a year, plus it makes sure I don't miss anything.

in most women's magazines is that its mostly used for commercial purposes: "Hey, buy this pink lipstick/bra/curling iron/purse/sweater/etc, and five cents of the purchase will go to a charity! Also, Oct. is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but pretty much all of the women's magazines ignored that completely. There's not as much stuff to advertise, I guess.
