After reading an article in "Women's World" magazine, I was very encouraged that women's health is looking a little different than it did back in the day. With new research comes new results and here are just a few things that I found out, so ladies out there gear up to defy former expectations of women's health:
1) My mom is always telling me to sit up straight with my shoulders back. While one way to practice confidence in yourself is to practice good posture, I was very excited to hear that Scottish researchers have found that having a rigid posture actually increases the tension and strain on your back! They do not suggest slouching over, but they did say to try finding a chair that allows you to rest your back in a comfortable way. So ladies, find a lazy chair and cozy up to a happy and healthy spine. After all, having a healthy spine is one of the most important health factors because it affects all other parts of your system.
2) Want a boost for your memory? Ok, really what college student doesn't want a healthy memory? Apparantly, if you wiggle your eyes from side to side before reading for 30 seconds, you are much more likely to retain the information that you have just read. Come exam time, this is sure to come in handy!
3) Feeling anxious about how much caffeine you consume in your coffee or tea? Be anxious no longer. Current research is showing that a healthy dose of caffeine helps to stimulate the brain cells (especially for memory retention) as women age. For the gentlemen reading this, don't get too excited. Apparantly, this positive side effect from caffeine consumption is only beneficial for women....so ladies drink on!
4) Concerned about unstable consumption of calories? Fret no more!!! Research shows that if women rotate their calorie intake by eating fewer calories one day and significantly more the other, the metabolism increases by 14 percent (and boosts even more on the days that you eat more!!!) This is because by rotating the amount of calories you eat daily, it keeps your metabolism guessing....so that is just one more reason to be thankful for days that you can stuff your face instead of starving yourself from Thanksgiving until Christmas!
I am so excited about these redefined tips for women's health! If you are interested in the original article, you can find it in the current edition of "Women's World." I just happened upon them as I was waiting in line at the grocery store, tried the little tip of wiggling my eyes from side to side (magic...just like when the lady from Bewitched wiggles her nose) and then that way, I didn't have to buy the magazine. Instead, I just rushed home to write a post about it, so that we as women at progressiveu.org can learn about health together! Happy health!
