When my brother and sister arrived, my sibling’s abusive father left back to Guatemala because he had another family that my mother had no knowledge of. My mother was left with three children. She went to ask for welfare but the man at the desk told her she couldn’t get welfare because she was an immigrant. She had to split up from my brother until she had enough money to get by. There were many times she had no food that she had to gave my sister, Monica*, to her friend, Dona Terre, who kept her for a month.
It hurt my mom deeply to have to be separated from her children but she knew she had to be strong for them. She again, worked harder and harder. After months of saving up my mother finally had enough to rent an apartment for her and my brothers and sisters. Things were finally looking up for her. My brother and sister went to school while the baby stayed with the babysitter.
While my mom was at work she met a man, Sergio*, who would soon be my father. Sergio would help my mom out by picking up my siblings from school and the babysitter. He gave my older sister Jenny* a break since she was the one who had to pick up the baby, Monica*. Sergio and my mother dated for some time and then my mom got pregnant.
