As soon as I finished my first blog on here, I came across a news website describing the child-rape epedemic in South Africa. Supposedly, raping children and even babies as young as 2 months old, is being caused by the fact that alot of South African men believe that having sex with a virgin will cure HIV/AIDS.
The South African police have stated that 41% of their rape cases that they become aware of, are young children with none being older than seventeen. It has been estimated that in the year of 2000 alone, there have been 58 rapes or attempts on a daily basis.
The site states that a 9 month old baby had to have a hysterectomy and further surgery to fix intestinal damage because she was gang raped! This is horrifying and I am glad I do not live there.
And another horrible thing the site talks about is AIDS infected babies being thrown in trash dumps. What the heck is going on there?
Whats even worse is that it not only happens in South Africa but everywhere else too.

It is disgusting to think that people actaully believe such things are true and could actually happen.
This issue is very horrifying and very upsetting. However, what people need to understand is that these guys are taking part in this because they don't know any differnent. What I mean by this is that they're told that if you have sex with someone who has HIV/AIDS you will get the disease. However, they're not told anything about virgins. They don't know that this will not help the problem.
It's very depressing knowing that these poor, innocent children are being torn apart because of this, but the only thing that'll save this problem is education. Once education will reach these people, hopefully the problem will decrease!
Why would you expect more from a country told by their govt that the polio vaccine causes sterilty?
Education, education, education. and if that doesn't work there is always capital punishment.
Blame it on the lack of education. 'Having sex with virgins is the cure for HIV/AIDS' is what they know.
While this is truly horrifying, and it is distrubing that this is happening at all, let alone as often as it is, I would like to point out that not all South Africans believe in such "cures" and there are people working to improve AIDS education in Africa. It makes me sick to hear about infants being raped, but (all too slowly) education will make a differents, so try not to lose hope....
I think it is a big issue in Africa that children are faced with.
