Introducing Progressive U's Work Study Program!

So you want to volunteer to help out on the site, but also don't want to give up the chance of winning a scholarship in the Blogging for Progress contest. Well, we need all the help we can get, so we're starting a new initiative.

In going with our university theme, we've decided to make a 'work study' program for those of you who want to 'work' for us, but still participate in the contest. In this program, you could get a variety of benefits, including points towards the scholarship contest (based on work completed) and free merchandise.

Below are the positions we have open. Benefits are negotiable, but will be proportional to the work done. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you have an idea that isn't mentioned below, send us an e-mail at info[at]progressiveu.org with your proposal.

1. Book Reviewer - We are always getting requests to review books, but can't always find someone with the time and/or interest in reviewing them for the Between the Lines column. Our book reviewers would be given the opportunity to receive these review copies, and would then be expected to post a review within a reasonable amount of time. In addition to the book, these individuals would likely receive points for each review they submit. Limited to 2-3 individuals.

2. Other Column Writer - We want our Between the Lines column to be more than just book reviews. As such, we'd like to have writers that might write about an interview, an educational television program, perhaps an explanation of a law currently being discussed at some level of government. We don't want these entries to be like regular blogs, and would not accept them if they are already posted to a specific user's blog. These individuals would receive points for each column entry they submit that is accepted for publication, and this position is open to all.

3. Campus Representative - As we kick off our Service Learning Program, we will need help in opening this program to various schools. These representatives will become knowledgeable about the program, and will be able to propose and explain it to various instructors at their school. They will be the in-house contact person for the program, and can refer instructors to the Progressive U Faculty for more information.

4. Reporter - Do you have a news feed that you read through? Would you like the chance to have a news feed on the Progressive U News Page? Or how about a topic on the Topic of the Week page? It only takes a few hours a week, and we'll think of some compensation to give to you. There are openings for 3-4 Topic of the Week persons, and 3-4 News persons.

Of course, those who are active and hard-working in their position will be able to get letters of recommendation for college or graduate school (or perhaps even a job) if they so desire.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please submit a volunteer application (make sure to select "Work Study" under type). Once we receive your application, we will contact you regarding your interests and determine whether or not to give you the position. Please allow up to 2 weeks for us to contact you regarding your application.

And, of course, we still have many positions open on the Progressive U Faculty, so if you don't want any of the positions listed above and still want to volunteer (giving up your place in the contest, of course), feel free to submit a volunteer form for that as well.

That sounds like a neat idea although I have no idea what that is.

Campus Rep = Service Learning Program Pimp .

Seriously though, ProgressiveU is revamping the Service Learning Program (used in classrooms as a way to connect students to others in order to generate discussion, establish critical thinking and research skills, amongst many other totally awesome things ProU offers). We've had a few classes use the program before, but we'll be implementing it on a wider scale and the campus reps will discuss the program with instructors and administrators at their schools, tell them what it is, how it works, why it's a good thing, and how to participate in the program.

How does it work when a professor uses ProU? Do they form a group? I can't imagine a professor wanting to wade through all the bullshit posts about GLBT rights (thought I'd use my own blogs as an example of bullshit, rather than insult someone else) to get to the posts by their students. It seems a group would be the only way to do it efficiently. Is there any way to set up an academic area with thematic divisions. I can imagine, for example, an education tab with only posts by people enrolled in education classes. There would be posts by education students across the country. Very cool. I think anyone should be able to comment, because that would allow a broader perspective, but if only education students post in the designated area, the posts that bitch about high school classmates that are tabbed "education" won't be in there. I don't know if I'm explaining this well at all.

I just can't imagine convincing any of my professors to use the site unless it were made more instructor friendly, kind of like Blackboard, but more interactive.

I have the idea in my brain, but it seems it hasn't quite worked its way into words yet. Feel free to ask clarifying questions.

We have done it two ways in the past. The first was to require students to post blogs, and tag them with a specific tag (I think it was like "CSE English" or something... this was also before we had free tagging, so there was no confusion), and then use the page for that tag for the professor to grade.

The second way was pretty different, because the instructor wanted to use the site, but only wanted her students to read the posts. So, we set up a private group and had students fill out a form in order to be added to the group. That seemed entirely too complicated, as I had to nag students all semester to get usernames that actually worked, and there were so many students confused about what you had to do (I didn't think it was that hard... you filled out a form at a specific web address, and then I added you to the group, and you posted your papers as forum topics).

Of course, since I'm completely redoing the program, I would love any ideas you have about it :)

The idea's not fully formed yet, but I'll get back to you. My idea is not like either of the two things you've tried, though.

Oooo I think I am getting it.

I originally like the forum for each class idea but I will have to argue it with myself. My first thought has something to do with needing the teacher's pass code and having a entry lock password with free commenting by anybody.....
off to argue /::)

What she said. We've worked with lower division English courses before, but I'm hoping to expand the program. The Campus Reps, if they sign up before they start classes, will also help me with ideas.

Campus rep sounds like quite a bit of work. I'd like to try something else, but I'm spread pretty thin as it is.

I'm hoping it won't require so much work for you, but rather more work for me But feel free to submit for any position, or suggest a new one if you would like to do something else not listed here.
