Today I talked to my father about college and my goals. I have been in college for 3 semesters now and its not becoming intresting or something i really want to pursue anymore. I wan to drop out and go to a culinary school for a while and then I want to go back to a university. My father is a chef and owns his own resteraunt, so i have been like a understudy since i was born. I have taken many cooking classes and I think Im very well-rounded in the art of culinary. I talked to my father and told him about this and he said "No, you already know everything that they will be teaching you and you dont need to pay money for something that isnt that important." Well its true i do know what they will be teaching, but i really like cooking. Culinary arts is a great passion of mine, but my family puts a lot of pressure on me about going to college and getting a degree. Dont get me wrong I will get a doctorate, but i want to persue this dream before its to late because i really dont want to go to culinary school when im done with my doctorate(4-5 years), med-school(4 years), and internship(8 years). I will be around 37 when I finish all of that and i think it will be somewhat difficult to go to culinary shcool and be at that age. Also what is the point of going to culinary school if I have everything in order to be a neurosurgeon. My parents also expect me to go back to Notre Dame, which i hated. The school is too big for me ( i graduated with 75 people, my town has like 100 people in it. .. my school was in another town). I partied to much which is my fault i know, but i dont want the temptation. I dont do so well with temptation. It was $48,000 to go there and they can and will kick you out if your GPA drops . . . i think it has to stay above and 3.0. Your attendence must be almost perfect, I dont do well with that either. I know a lot of these things are my fault, but if i go to a smaller school that offers the same things I wont be so tempted and I have many good friends that can "keep my ass in check". Sorry for the language if your offended im very sorry tell me and i will take it out. Well I just though i would go on this little rant because I dont know what to do. My family is irish, my parents are from Ireland and the first born(which is me) is everything in irish tradition. I have to live up to a lot and be that perfect child. I want to make them proud of me and i dont want to dissipoint them. Their approval means everything to me and I know that if I do what they want I want be that happy, but if I do what I want I will be happy, then sad because of their disapproval. Well thank you for reading have a nice day peace . . . . .

You should do what your heart tells you to do. You're the only one that has to live with you for the rest of your life, so why go into something that you really don't want to do just to avoid disappointing your parents?
Well I love my parents very much and they have supported me and giving me everything in the world I could ask for. I just want to make them proud and make them feel like they have done the right thing. Also the money thing I know i can do it on my own.. . .it will be VERY hard. . . . but my dad has paid for everything i have a job but i dont even know that back account that the money goes into lol i just use my dads credit cards. I work in retail a couple days a week and have had this job for a year and a half. Mainly just a escape from everything i love my job
thanks for the comment im trying to branch off slowly and seeing what happens i applied for FASFA last night, and i will see if i can do it on my own
peace
I believe that you should pursue culinary school because you are passionate about it. Passion brings things to life and if you let that go it will be such a waste. I understand the pressure of your parents wanting you to do other things beside what you really want. My parents are from the Philippines and I am first born, they want me to be a Nurse or a Pharmacist but my passion does not lie there. I do not know where it is yet, but when I do I will pursue it. In the end, you have to live with the life that you choose and in the end your parents will still love you because you have built a good life for your self. Stay in college but no matter what subject it is that you study they'll be happy because you would have done well for yourself either way.
Holy shitake mushrooms that is a long paragraph...
Anyway, I believe if you have an interest in the culinary arts, you should pursue it. Is there anyway to take summer classes? Then you could continue with the education you're already working on and pursue that interest at the same time.

Thanks for the comment and yes I have already explored that option and most culinary schools last just as long as a regular degree program. . . . So
i couldnt go to college and culinary school. Also i want to commit myself 100% to what im doing and not half and half thanks for the advice though
and yes VERY long paragraph i just didnt feel the need to be all correct since its not really a progressive blog its more personal
If you've already got the know how for culinary, you could go for a business management degree or something. Open your own restaurant. Open a chain of restaurants. Take some fun cooking classes at a community college in your free time or maybe even like a 16-week bartender certification, if you're looking for something new and different.
It's a "real" degree, you still get to do what you want. Everyone wins. What do you need a doctorate for, anyway? If med school isn't really your dream, you shouldn't follow it just to make your parents happy. No one likes a bitter doctor.

maybe you could incorporate cooking into your medical journey? Make it like a research thing. The healing powers of food. It could be your thesis. Music therapy and guided imagery are already proven to be beneficial in the healing process. Why not food?
