Carpe Diem Perspective

Little Things

Dear God, please give to me
A thankful heart for little things-
For sunshine on my kitchen floor
For the scrambled egg on the pan;
For memories in the making
And for the trash the children say and do,
That I will smile about, perhaps
Some future quiet day.
Grant me appreciation
Of the small joys that are mine-
The special birthday parties,
The cedar vine
Creeping up the door;
The clean fresh smell
Of clothes just washed;
The ivy on my wall,
The children's thrilled delight
To wake and find the first snowfall.
For the first peeking flower in the springtime,
And the crispy weather of fall-
For leaves that crunch,
My man in for lunch,
And laughter shared together.
Give me enthusiasm
To greet each brand new day
With honest joy in living.
As you write my life journey
Whether in China or France
Let me love the little things
And thank our Father when I pray.

I wrote this poem as a creative writing assignment and I really enjoyed how it captures the Carpe Diem perspective. Carpe Diem means seize the moment. I feel many people in our society have been lacking in really enjoying the little things in life. Everyone seems to be caught up in life with career goals, family, and entertainment. No one cares that spring is around the corner with flowers peeking through the ground. No one seems to take the moment to enjoy the sun and the clouds moving through. I think society needs to slow down and take a minute to enjoy the little things!
