Take Action, it's Your Life

Years ago our founding fathers set up the United States Constitution, listing rights of the people. It wasn't until more recently however, around the 1960s, that these rights were either being thrown out of proportion or being subtly taken away. Freedom of Speech, how far can you go with that one? You can speak your mind, that's true, you can say what you want about anything and not live in fear of going to jail for saying it. But you also can burn a flag, the American flag, the symbol of the freedom, which you are so acutely exercising. Should this be allowed? I mean, people died so that we could wave that flag, so that you could have the right to burn that flag. Then let's look at another freedom, the Freedom of Religion, in schools every single religion is allowed however Christianity is shunned. The religion on which this country was based is shunned on a day-to-day basis. I see it all the time. These are our rights people, how far to you want them taken or shot down? This isn't against the government, by no means is it. It's a thought that we need to think about. What do we want our freedoms coming to? Do you want it where you can do anything you want? If so then you’ll get chaos, because few people out there will do things just to be nice, they’ll look to hurt you and when they know they can, they will. Or on the flip side, do you want your freedoms taken away, do want to lose the right to pray in a church on Sunday or the right to own a firearm? People listen, look out for your rights, pay attention to them and take action. These are your lives that I’m talking about, mine as well. Don’t just sit back and do nothing, do something.

I applaud your enthusiam, but I have to take issue with two things that you said:

I think I'll let the Supreme Court of the United States answer this one...

"If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable. We have not recognized an exception to this principle even where our flag has been involved....In short, nothing in our precedents suggests that a State may foster its own view of the flag by prohibiting expressive conduct relating to it....There is, moreover, no indication -- either in the text of the Constitution or in our cases interpreting it -- that a separate juridical category exists for the American flag alone. Indeed, we would not be surprised to learn that the persons who framed our Constitution and wrote the Amendment that we now construe were not known for their reverence for the Union Jack. The First Amendment does not guarantee that other concepts virtually sacred to our Nation as a whole -- such as the principle that discrimination on the basis of race is odious and destructive -- will go unquestioned in the market-place of ideas.We decline, therefore, to create for the flag an exception to the joust of principles protected by the First Amendment." ~ Texas v. Johnson (1989)

Really? Can you give us an example? Considering that almost 80% of our population is at least nominally chrisitian, I really can't see how this religion is being "shunned" in our country. Being required to follow the same rules as everyone else isn't "shunning." As for your comment about our country being founded on the religion of christianity, I would like to direct you to a document written at the direction of one of our Founding Fathers (President George Washington) and signed into Law by another of our Founding Fathers (President John Adams) that said, very plainly...

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..." ~ The Treaty of Tripoli (1797)

I mean, it really doesn't get much plainer than that.

I think you mean "for granted", not "for granit".

As for the original post, I don't see the whole attacking christianity thing. As a child, I was forced to "pray" in first grade before eating. I was also required to be in a Christmas play, recite bible verses, and answer test questions about easter. All of this happened in a public school. I remember the kid in our class that declared atheism. He was made fun of by teachers, faculty, and students. During Christmas play practice, he had to do extra work. If he didn't, his grades went down.

I've never seen any attacks on Christian freedoms. Others don't have the right to practice their religious ceremonies in school or elsewhere if it causes an interruption, so I don't see it. If a teacher led a pagan ritual the sky would fall down, so why is it such a big deal that teachers can no longer lead prayer?
