Getting an Allowance

I have always wondered about allowance. Did people get it for doing chores or did they just get it to get it? I saw some article on MSN about children getting allowances and how much to give and when to give it. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/CollegeAndFamily/RaiseKids/ShouldYourKidsGetAnAllowance.aspx

My question to everyone is: What do you think is the right age to get allowance? Should people even get it? If they do, how much is appropiate? Does the amount of money given depend on the child's age?

I never got an allowance for doing chores in the house until my last year in high school and I used it to apply to colleges and pay for any thing I NEEDED not wanted. It was just understood to be part of my responsibilities in the house. Most of my extended family (who are from Jamaica and other West Indian countries) view this as an "American concept" or just foolishness. Some of them do give their kids an allowance. My sister gets one now for doing chores in the house and she does more chores now since I am away at college. We never used to get one before. My sister is 12 going on 13 and it seems strange that my parents want to give her one. I mean what is she buying? I think she should pay for cell phone bill with that money.

But anyways, what do you think?

An allowance is for kids too young to get a job, when they help around the house without being asked and when they do a good job.
Teen agers old enough to work should NOT get an allowance, in my own opinion.
As for what they should use it for, its her own money after that. Allowance teaches the management of money at a young age.
But, this is what I think.

No, I wasn't given money directly in return for work around the house. My mom gave me pocket money from time to time (if she had some to spare and I wasn't grounded) but doing chores were just part of living there.

When I was grounded I got extra chores, and of course I didn't get paid for those either!

I got an allowance based on how many household chores I did that were assigned to me. So, if I slacked off, I got no money, but if I did my chores, I got some money. It was an odd system but I guess it worked out alright.

Once I started working, the allowance disappeared.

I was more responding to the article talking about 4-6 year olds getting an allowance. What are they buying? The only money I would give a child that age is like snack money for lunch at school.

Yeah, that's weird. Like a 4-year-old needs money.

i don't get an allowance at all. i do chores. I get money whenever it comes my way. i sew bags for people sometimes or save my birthday money to buy food at school. The only time i spend that money is at school, otherwise, my parents buy me everything.

At several points in my life, a chores-for-allowance system was set up in my house. I was supposed to get $5 a week if I did my chores everyday that week without being told when I was about 14. I did my chores everyday without being told for a month and still haven't seen a cent (I'm almost 19 now). I gave up after that month and didn't really try, not because I thought that not getting paid means no chores, but because an agreement was made and followed through on only at one end.
