Well, this is my very first blog post on my very first blog. I found this site looking through Fast Webs and decided I didn't have anything to lose by creating a blog, so here I am!
I am a non-traditional student, just started back to school after taking a long break. Although it wasn't really a break from anything at all, since I still had to work. I strange twist of fate landed me unemployed so I did some soul searching and decided that I really wanted to get into social work. Social work really has nothing to do with my current profession, which is in the IT field, but I believe with all my heart that I am meant to do work directly with the community.
In this day and age it's really hard to find people who want to help other people. I mean, think about it. Say you're driving down a dark road late at night and see a car that ran off the road. Would you stop and help? These days, there is too much fear about who exactly is in that other car. Do they have a gun? Are they feigning trouble to rob you? It's too dangerous to reach out a hand, you just can't trust anyone.
Then there's the internet. It has become a great way to avoid other people all together - in a way. You can take classes on-line, do your banking on-line, pay bills, contact customer service, practically anything. With all the things you can do on a computer, why bother to leave the house? Maybe all this isolation is contributing the rise in mistrust in the world.
So, mulling all of this over, I decided that what I really want to do is work in a field where I can work one-on-one with people - real, live, breathing people. I want to push the computer aside and try to focus on true human interaction. Specifically, I really want to work with people and families in a hospital setting. When a family member is in the hospital, it's so difficult to focus on plans for after care, programs to help with finances and treatment programs. I want to be able to help people with all of this stuff. I want to try to help families understand what the patient may be experiencing and the things they can do to help the recovery process. So, in striving to reach this goal, I am now a college student. And so begins my grueling quest for a degree in Social Work.....
