American Ignorance

Recently in my amercian citizenship class that we are required to take, we had to take the old citizenship test that immigrants had to take before they could be considered citizens.  The test was 100 questions long and you only had to get 70 correct to be a "citizen."  Some questions included easy things such as what are the colors of the american flag and more difficult ones like naming all of the 13 original colonies (it seems easy but it's a lot more difficult than we originally thought).  The sad thing was that we had a very low number of kids that passed the test.  Probably only a fourth or so of my class of 20.  The other period of American citizenship had an even lower success rate.

After learning our results, our teacher informed us that every single foreign exchange student that has taken this exam have always passed.  I couldn't even imagine learning everything about France or Mexico's government, I even struggled with our own government's basic information.  Why are our students so uninformed and what could we do to prevent this and educate our students?

immigrants put in so they can learn and adapt into this country- just because some of them have accents and don't completely understand you when you say something to them the first time, that does not mean they don't want to be american

as i've said on other blogs, people here do need to be tested and forced to learn about their own government and country-it's a shame how little some people know

Of course many American citizens can't easily pass the tests. They don't feel the need to study as hard...they're already citizens. Immigrants who want to become America citizens, they have to work a little bit harder. I'm just hoping they're not making the immigrants work TOO hard just because they want to become citizens.

Pro illegal alien supporters looking to insult American citizens and our immigration laws, by making repeat blogs on the same subject to provide an illusion that there is a general consensus that the test immigrants are required to pass is unfair and that not even Americans can pass it. Sorry, but it's a rather pathetic attempt.
