Iran

Recently there been news about how Bush is thinking about nuking the country
Iran because they announce they have found uranium.  They are violating the NPT, which we as in the country
US should not allow it to go unnoticed.   I believe that they should be punish, but do not now how without causing problems to the citizens or creating more consequences for ourselves.  Even though,
Iran had found uranium, it will take them a long period before they can even develop nuclear weapons.  They still have to extract it.  I am not saying that we should not worry, but I do not think we should nuke them either.  That would just bring on too many problems.  We already have enough on our plate.  As of right now we already spread out too thin.  In addition, if we attack another country in the
Middle East, the international community is going to start to ponder about what we are trying to do.  We already attacked Iraq and
Afghanistan.  What do you think we should do about the problem and how do you feel about it?

Well, just to clarify, they didn't find Uranium, but rather have successfullly completed the enrichment process. Basically, this means that they can make an atom bomb, given more time.

I have no idea as to what to do about this crisis. There seems to be no good solution: leaving them alone means that it is a matter of time before they have a nuke; attacking them preemptively might start World War III.

Iran is not Iraq. It is a much larger country, with amazing natural resources and a population with a rich and extensive history. Persians are not Arabs; they speak a different language and have a different culture. And they are known to be tough warriors, at least historically. An amazing percentage of Iranians are currently under the age of thirty, because SO MANY died in the Iran-Iraq war, possibly the most vicious, brutal war of the latter half of the twentieth century. A war with Iran would likely mean greater losses, on both sides, than those we have seen in Iraq. Furthermore, Iran has a long history with Russia; the two countries are allies (more or less), and the Russians have considerable investments in Iran. Iran is also a valuable trading partner for China, and I doubt either country would like to see Iran wasted.

I think a war with Iran would be costly, and extremely detrimental to the global community, for the following reasons:
1. It will not end with an airstrike. Likely, Iraq would turn to total chaos as the Shia population turns completely against US troops. Currently, Sunni insurgents are causing most of the ruckus. As Iran is mostly Shia, the Shias in Iraq would certainly feel angry at US troops in case of an attack. An airstrike might prompt Iranian troops to enter Iraq, as well. At the very least, terrorism would increase with frequency: Iran is one of the major backers of Hezbollah, the world's foremost terrorist organization. And if we were to engage Iranian troops, Syrian troops might cross into Iraq and attack us, as well: after all, Iran and Syria are allies, and if we attack Iran, the Syrians would likely think "we're next." So we might see a massive ground war, which would mean that if you're an American male between the ages of 18 and 30, get ready to be drafted.
2. Ground war or not, Iran has the capability to retaliate against our ally Israel with their ballistic missiles. Nuclear or not, they could devastate Israel and kill a lot of Israelis (and Palestinians). This might prompt Hamas to step up its operations and a war might break out there. Or, Israel might respond with nuclear weapons and annihilate Iran. Such an attack would poison the northern hemisphere with radiation and kill a whole lot of innocent people.
3. Whether or not Iran fires its missiles, it will cut oil output. It may even decide to knock out every oil tanker that comes through the strait of Hormuz, which would devastate the global oil supply because many Saudi tankers go through this 2-mile wide strait. Plus, the Iranians have an underwater missile which, from what I have heard, can travel almost 100 meters/second: this weapon could cause considerable damage to any US Navy vessels in the region. Anyway, this lack of oil would cause a global economic recession, which I think is what China and Russia fear more than a war. But it can get worse, because:
4. There may be fundamentalist revolutions in Saudi and Egypt, and any Arabic partners we have will be gone. Which means, if the Saudi oil supply is in the hands of fundamentalists, there will be NO oil. Forget it. Global economic meltdown. We couldn't afford to fight a war under those conditions. Or, maybe Russia and China will move in, and throw their weight around. This could have potential for conflict, as well.

So I hate to sound like a pessimist, but the region is inherently unstable. One strike could set off a huge conflict, an economic crash, or both. On the other hand, if we let these guys get nuclear weapons, they might just be able to sneak them into our country... into every major city... and one day, poof. No more USA. I think that's what the biggest fear is, and it scares the hell out of me, too. In such a case, I don't know if our military could respond to that. Maybe we'd just launch our nukes.... and then kiss the northern hemisphere goodbye.

....Well, there is hope that Russia and China can talk some sense into these guys. But I fear this whole situation could get out of control very fast.

Dear Jenma,
Most of the problems can't be solved by attack or sth else. You (US) wanted to inculcate "democracy" in Iraq, what's the result? Nothing, only loss, lots of american dead soldiers, economic loss, worlds' critics etc. Did they start living in the way you wanted them? No. If you are real Christians, you wouldn't make war, kill innocent people, children. Firstly, person must analyze his family, friends, society. Is your country, society so democratic and honestly? I'm absolutely sure it's not, why do you think you have right to judge all of the world? You think you are goodness, you can change the world? Examine your consciences...
Peace is always much better than war.
Anyway, everyone will be responsable for his deeds.
