Don't worry, there's hope

Many people are born and blessed with a high metabolism. They go through their lives being able to eat whatever they want and still staying skinny. Well I am here to say that not everyone can be so lucky. I am from one of the fattest cities in America, Houston, Texas. I've seen enough people to know that obesity is a major problem in today's society.

I have grown up in a family where obesity is common for the women on my mom AND my dad's side, and I know exactly what I am headed for in the future. All the women who were once slim and trim are now all battling obesity. Well, I have made it my goal to win the battle and break the trend. Being a college student, it's obvious that I can't always eat healthy, but I do try. I don't eat beef, I try to eat salads and vegetables on a regular basis, and I drink a lot of water. I also exercise almost everyday.

Now, I'm not saying that eating healthy and excercising daily is going to help a person overcome obesity. I've seen enough shows on TLC to know that some people are just born that way. Sad, but true. Some people just can't help but gain weight. No matter how much they diet and excercise, they still gain. I saw this show about a man who weighed 1000 pounds. He struggled through life battling obesity, and finally his heart stopped and he died. It was on of the saddest stories I had ever seen.

I know that dieting is a huge trend these days, but I want to let people know the dangers of dieting. It is good to eat healthy and exercise, but it is not good if you become obsessed with doing so. Diet pills and extreme dieting are very dangerous and hardly ever have positive long term effects. I'm not saying this has anything to do with her death, but think about Anna Nicole Smith and TrimSpa. The message I got is: First you get skinny, and then you die. HA! What a great advertisement. And how about the guy that created the Atkin's Diet? He died too. Coincidence? Maybe. All I'm saying is that if you want to be fit and healthy, do it the right way. Cut back not only on portions but on fatty foods too. Grab an apple instead of chips. Also, drink lots of water. Sodas are high in sugar and are bad for your teeth as well as your body. Be sure to exercise in a healthy manner. An hour of cardio a day is good. Also, you will see better results if you work out a little bit everyday versus working out a lot a few times a week or even less. If you get your body into a good habit of food and exercise, you will see a lot better results. Fluctuating diets and exercise habits will really have no positive effect on you.

So that's enough of my ranting for now. I just wanted to encourage those who aren't so lucky enough to have fast metabolism to keep your head up. If you start out early and build a healthy lifestyle, you will have a lifetime of benefits.
