Something that no one is really talking about is what is going to happen if the Democratic race stays this inconclusive. CNN as of today has Hillary with 885 pledged delegates, and Barack with 918 pledged delegates. Incredibly close. And in the Super Delegates that are "pledged' (since they can change their mind at any time) and you have Obama with 1049, and Hillary with 1108. That is usually called a statistical tie. And on to it the fact that John Edwards still has his 26 delegates, and you can see how he might come into play at the convention. Let’s, however, take Edwards out of this, and say that 13 of his delegates go to Hillary and 13 to Barack. That evens the field once again. If this race, stays this inconclusive, and they keep splitting the delegates - that means that the convention will have to decide the candidate. That means that the pledged delegates will lose some of there value, as Howard Dean – the DNC Chairman, and other party leaders try and figure out what to do. That means that it is very likely that the Super Delegate will decide who is the Democratic Nominee. The Super Delegate is a delegate who is not pledged by the voters of the state, rather they are big men, and women in the Democratic Party – examples are Senators, Congressmen, Former DNC Chairmen, etc. If this happens, and the Super Delegates chose someone, it will cause millions of Americans to lose their votes. This will not be taken lightly. The Democrats could well have another Chicago 1968 on their hands. And that would be terrible, for the country, and the party. The Democrats would have no hope of winning the White House if they come out of a brokered convention with a candidate who was picked in a back room. That era of politics is supposed to be behind us. The Independent vote in this country will not be attracted to it, and the Conservative vote will definitely be shunned away by it. It will be very easy for the Republican Nominee to point at this, and frankly, laugh.
As such, it is essential, for the party, and for the country, that the Democrats "hurry up" their process. Because if the Super Delegates choose, it will not be pretty. And the arm twisting that will occur on each of these Delegates, will be terrible to watch.
