My boyfriend has been involved in demolition derbies for alot of his life and so it was not surpriseing when he invited me along last year for my first demolition derby season to see it for my self. He doesn't drive it anymore but he does work in the pits and is fairly well known there.
This year, his ex-step son (who we are still close with) had to stand up for a fellow driver that was getting accused of cheating and loading his vehicle because he spent more money on some of his parts than the other drivers felt was necessary. It began a bit of a "war".
You see, the way I am is loyal. If you "attack" one of mine than I stand up for them. Well, by his standing up for his friend he brought the problem on himself also. Accusations and insults were flying back and forth between the groups and all in the name of good natured rivalry and competition supposedly. Well, I stood up and his girlfriend stood up and made our opinions perfectly clear. Next came the attacks on what women were really good for and what kind of guy let a woman stand up for him.
It has finally calmed back down but I've learned something about all of it... there are more little boys throwing tantrums in the derby pits than there are men driving cars. It was ridiculous and I know I wasn't much better for taking the bait and defending the team but my temper took over I won't lie.
These groups and teams though are going by "mafia" instead of team though. These people have probably never even met a member of "the family" (never mind been a part of it) and because they think it is cool and bad ass of them they use the word like it means nothing. Why is it that a word that once stood for danger and crime is now so "cool"? They hide behind this tough guy attitude with their special "big boy" names and yet when it comes down to the line they are simply children playing pretend.
I actually am able to see a comical side to all of this. These guys that are so big bad and tough that profess to be so strong and invincible are really just running their own little soap opera. they're turning into "girls" all on their own... hahaha :))

I wouldn't say that they are turning into girls. This is clearly a typical competitive male, testosterone-ridden behaviour.
I hate it when people take up for others just because they "should". It drives me nuts. Why argue about something that you don't believe is right?

the parts that I stood up for was what I did believe was right. I stood up for a person that was being wrongly accused. I was taught that sticking up for someone when you believe in the situation is how you treat your friends and family.
Forgive me if my choice of wording did not make that clear.
I too hate it when someone sticks up for soemthing without any solid grounds. If they are just repeating someone else's beliefs than their argument is useless. the accusations being made were against a person that has driven in the demo for awhile and my boyfriend and I have both worked on his car. An insult to the standards of this driver's car is also an insult on our honesty, our ethics, our work, and our credibility within the demo circle.
I reacted within the moments of anger and insult rather than just letting their ignorance of the situation to just disappear into the wind as the dust that it was.

the statment above had nothing to do with your blog though.

Not being into demo doesn't make you less of a man and I'd never be one to accuse you of it because of that fact.
I avoid fights when I can but there are times when my irish temper and my Cherokee temper get the best of me... what can I say? I'm human.
It can be alot of fun though. When it is approached with proper sportsmanship and in the right frame of mind its exciting and relaxing in a strange sort of way but that is just me. I love it!
