Prom: Useless or a Wonderful tradition

Prom is almost here for me at North Valley's High School and I am still without a date. To be honest, I have not been looking. I am a senior this year and did not attend my junior prom. To me, it seemed like a waste of life. I do not like the music, the tickets are 50+ dollars, and the company you keep can usually be considered mediocre at best. I hate the drama and I cannot stand seeing people actually cry or get upset at one of these functions. You actually paid 50 dollars to come to a dance and get upset because your date is dancing with someone else or whatever the case may be. I cannot believe it. Why would someone subject themselves to this?

On the other hand, I still have those who tell me that Prom is necessary and you need a date and its a beautiful tradition. I can see how it would be nice to have one last big party with your friends and I know it is nice to get dressed up for the occasion, but what is the real point. I simply cannot wrap my mind around this. This concept of dance attendance. It almost feels mandatory. I find this all so ridiculous. And, why is a date considered necessary? Who needs that kind of pressure. Anyway, I digress.

Let me know what you think:

It maybe a beautiful tradition, but t's not all about he ate it's so the fact that your graduting an you have to have some fun after al you 18 or 17 only once. In my opinio yo should go am goin and my ticket is 70 dollars. Well and remember it's allabot havin fun... i wouldn't even take a chance. Remember go to the after party.

That's a lot just for tickets. Tickets for my prom were $15, and I felt ripped off since it was supposed to be paid for by our fundraisers.

I remember seeing an episode of the tv show "What I like about you" Holly and her friends decided to have an anti-prom. I thought this was a grand idea till the end of the episode, holly realized her anti-prom had become more like the prom than the actual prom. girls crying in bathrooms, dates breaking up then getting back together. It made me realize how OVER rated all of those traditions truly are.. I like the idea of getting together with your friends for one last blow-out parTAY! but is it really necessary to congregate with people you probably don't even like?! Not my thing.... maybe I'm just lame :)

I agree. I think it could be done in a much more economical fashion, too. There's no reason for the average Jane to spend close to $1000 for one night when there are people starving and dying of disease in other countries. I just couldn't morally justify it, so I didn't go to my Sr. prom. I went to my Jr. prom, but I was a bargain hunter so it was very cheap.
