I was always taught that it is what you know that propels your sucess in life, but recently, lets say the last five years, I have realized that I was taught wrong.
Now I have not began my career as of yet, but my live in girlfriend has. She is a staff assistant on Capitol Hill. She works in the office of a US Senator. She always comes home upset that everything she learned in college basically means nothing once you get into the job market. She graduated with a Legal Comm. degree, so her degree is non-technical. I tried explaining to her that she needs to get in good with her bosses, and other employees, but she is stuck on the fact that "a person without a degree could do this job."
She asked me, "why is it that I have a job that a person without degree could do?" I told her. Its not about what you know, but who you know. Her aunt was good friends with the senator decades ago and secured her interview over a year before she even graduated.
Nowadays, especially in non-technical fields, college is like the parental consent form for a school field trip. The school/job knows you do not REALLY need it, but to protect themselves they must set up boundries, or anyone could just come along for the ride.
So all you poli-sci majors, or public relations majors, or communications majors. You are in the game once you sign up for those corriculums. Communicate, go out there and meet people, mingle. Because if you dont, and you think you can just go to work, then go home at 5:30pm, your wrong.

That's why it's called "entry level." Tell your girlfriend she'll be fine! She's doing everything right. She just needs to make a good impression, build those powerful references, and she'll move on to something more challenging soon. It's part of the game, like you said. Gotta play by the rules sometimes.

Isn't it sad that it's "who" you know. Someone could be in the back pocket of a politician and get a job that someone more qualified for needs.
Hopefully with your girlfriend's knowledge she can get ahead without having to know everyone on a first name basis.

The Republican messiah Ronal Reagan’s opinion of George W. Bush (The Reagan Diaries published by Harper Collins):
'A moment I've been dreading. George brought his n'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work. “

"Anything that can go wrong, Will go wrong"----Murphy's Law
The problem is that there are four brothers. Jeb is in Florida and then you have George, Neil, and Marvin. George would be older than 40 at the time and Neil would be almost 40, while Marvin would be 33. So it could be either George or Neil. We only hear that it is a Bush son, not which one.
Even if it wasn't G.W.Bush, it still shows that its all about who you know, and not what you know.

Actually it doesn't. Because no one got a job from it. No Bush family member actually held a job in the Reagan Administration our in companies linked to the Reagan Administration.
Besides, if you're trying to say that Bush was elected solely because of his connection to Reagan....well that's pure rubbish and impossible especially since Reagan was senile not much after the end of his term until he died.
please stop twisting my words.......its very annoying.
All that quote shows is that it is all about who you know. An idiot could be considered for a job based on the basis of who his father is, or who his father knows.
I dont know that any Bush member really got a job as a result of this conversation, but these sorts of conversations take place daily throughout the world.

I'm not twisting words. You implied in the comment that someone got the job because they knew Reagan. Your implying is very annoying. Claiming Bush is an idiot is like claiming that Hilary is a genius. If Hilary gets in, it'll be not what she knows but who she was married to. So these conversations take place, doesn't mean something is always going to happen.
you should review the original post that led you to twist my words. here it is.
This is a quote rumored to be taken from Ronald Reagan himself.

fromthe RUMORED quote, I took it as another conversation that could possibly lead to a job for a well to do "do-nothing".
What you take from it is your own, but do not flat out lie and say that I was Implying anything. That is the full post unedited. check for yourself.
