Drunk Driving in teenagers

My High School prom is the saturday. Well every year my  high school does this mock drunk driving crash. We stood out in this field for about a hour while all the emergency people try to save these drunk driving victims. The whole time the high school is standing outside no body is really paying attention to it. So my question is do they think this is preventing kids from driving drunk after prom? I'm a junior and i know for a fact that this isn't going to stop the people who want to drive drunk. Their going to do it anywys. Why are they so worried about drunk driving when theirs kids out in high school that isn't going to get drunk but they are still going to but something into their body that can effect the way they drive. I know that theirs kids that are going to be taking drugs. So shouldn't my high school be doing something with drugs and how they can effect their driving and their bodies? Why do they just choose to do drunk driving?

Our high school does the same thing for senior prom and it seems like it only really affects the people who are actually in the wreck. We had a public speaker once, I don't remember his name, but he was hit by a drunk driver and it left him paralyzed. I think that more people need to speak who have been in a situation like that. About the drug issue, people need to talk who have been affected by it. I know a women who was hit buy a driver on drugs, and the car caught on fire. She survived, but I wonder if she wishes she hadn't because she is now physically deformed. I love her very much, but every time, she looks in the mirror, I know she thinks about that day.

Personally, I do agree that drugs are also a problem. However, maybe the approach is one step at a time. Think about it.. if you put all effort into one thing.. you get more affect in it than if you split your efforts into two things, a little effective in each... which is better? I'm not saying that drugs aren't a problem as wel. I understand that they are.

Not even two weeks ago, two kids who graduated from my school last year were in a one car drunk driving accident.. and the one sitting in the passenger seat was killed. It definitely made me rethink the whole scenerio.

I can understand how a mock accident on a football field isn't really going to have much of an impact. I think a more effective approach would be for students to watch a video made by those suffering from the loss of a friend... who was killed in an accident. More first hand experience... sort of. I dunno. I think this is definitely an important topic.. that there is no easy answer to.

I understand that we need to take it one step at a time but in my school there is more kids on drugs then what they are drinking. So i think that we should have started with the drug problem. I know more people that is going to go out and get high after prom then there is getting drunk. So do we really need to prevent one or both?

wELL I LIVE IN LAS VEGAS AND THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL DEATHS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DUE TO DRUNK DRIVING AND UNSAFE DRIVING. WE HAVE A PROGRAM LIKE THE ONE YOU SAW. I FOGET WHAT IT IS CALLED BUT IT WAS INTERESTING AND TOUCHED A LOT OF PEOPLE. THEY HAD STUDENTS WRITE GOODBYE LETTERS TO THEIR PARENTS AND THE PARENTS WERE IN THE AUDIENCE. IT WAS VERY SAD AND PEOPLE WERE CRYING AND STUFF. THEY ALSO DID THE MOCK ACCIDENT WHICH WAS INTERESTING.

AT LEAST SCHOOLS ARE MAKING AN EFFORT OF SOME SORT DIRECT ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM.

OR AT LEAST GIVE TEENS A SECOND THOUGHT BEFORE THEY DO SOMETHING THAT COULD BE LIFE THREATENING LIKE DRUNK DRIVING.

I THINK IT IS CALLED "EVERY 15 MINUTES"
EVERY 15 MINUTES A TEEN DIES IN AN ALCOHOL RELATED CAR ACCIDENT OR SOMETHING.

Our high school does something really fun for graduation though. Every year our school gets numerous donations from local businesses and they host a senior bash. Everyone is invited, but only the seniors get in free. They have fun games, food and prizes. They announce the prizes all night long, but you can only claim them at 5:00 in the morning the next day, and once you leave, you can't get back in. It is so much fun and safe. Also, any parent is welcome to go for free as well.

Yea my school does the same thing we call it prom blast, but theres only like maybe 200 kids that stay all the others go to after parties. I know my freshman year when i went with a senior there was atleast 20 kids drunk or high before they even left prom. So maybe prom needs to be montiored more or have a tip line to turn in anyone that u know is drunk or high to prevent deaths and accidents from happening.

I don't know. My high school didn't do anything like that. I think high schools and students need to take this issue more seriously. People are killed and injured FOR LIFE in these accidents. We had an incident my senior year involving some of my classmates coming to school drunk...two days in a row, different kids and or the ones who didn't get caught the first day. These kids were 18, adults. They did not get into any trouble with the police; the school "handled" it. I disagree. Telling an 18 year old who is angry at you for busting her that she has to go to alcohol classes doesn't necessarily fix the problem. Chances are she will sit through the classes, laughing inside and then meet her friends that weekend. Two things I have a big problem with: binge drinking and driving while intoxicated (by any drugs). They are both dangerous and can have serious consequences.

My school does something similar to that, but not really. We have a day where people get pulled out of class and get their faces painted white (with a little black tear) and they aren't allowed to speak for the rest of the day. Obviously they're trying to show what drunk driving does, but it doesn't work. Those same people that "died" end up starting back up that weekend. We had people actually die from drunk driving in our school. They would be juniors this year. You think that might change people's minds, but they kept on doing it. Our generation is stubborn, inconsiderate, and we are all so focused on themselves. I don't think there is really anything anybody can do to change people's minds. It's something you need to do yourself.
