"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study adds to evidence that while women with breast implants are not at greater risk of breast cancer, they do seem to have an elevated rate of suicide.
The reason for the suicide risk is unclear, but several studies have now come to similar conclusions. Some researchers believe the link is explained by higher rates of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem among women who undergo breast augmentation."

I can definitely see the correlation between breast implants and suicide. Many women get breast implants to try to increase their self-esteem. For most women, though, their esteem issues weren't ever really about their small breasts; it was a depper issue. So they get the implants expecting to be completely different, but they still aren't happy with themselves.
Before women undergo plastic surgery, they should try as hard as possible to make sure that there are no underlying esteem issues that the surgery probably can't solve. For some women, breast implants are enough to make them feel good about themselves, but for many, they still aren't happy with either their character, or maybe other aspects of their appearance.
Many of those who get breast implants do so because society says they should, or they think society says they should. Clearly, I disagree; however, I'm not a female, so I really can't relate too much to the experience.

Women who get breast implants are usually so self conscious about themselves that they believe getting them will make them feel better. Afterwards, if they don't get the results they so desired, they will sink into an even deeper depression. Uh oh. Damn plastic surgery.

Often, implants are used not to make the breast LARGER, but to return it to its prior size and shape after pregnancy or extreme weight loss, when the breast tissue actually shrinks, leaving excess skin. Many women in these situations opt to have a breast lift combined with a small implant that would return what is referred to as "upper pole fullness" to the breast.
Thinking that all, or even most, breast augmentation operations are about size is a common mistake. When analyzing data such as this, it would be more useful to look at the circumstances of the breast implant procedures, and break them down into sub categories. This would show us whether this alleged increase in suicide was accross the board with the procedure, or more directly related, say, to cases where an increase in size was the desired result (vs. reconstruction).
